Council for Children and Youth

The Council for Children and Youth met on May 15 as a renewed and revitalized council. This energetic group consists of representatives from Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sunday School, BHUM Youth Group, Bermuda Hundred Child Development Center and parents of children and youth from our congregation!

Our mission is to provide a safe place as well as a beacon of light to all children in our community by sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Our purpose is to collaborate, plan and implement Christian activities for children and youth as an outreach to our community. Our present work for this summer quarter is to support VBS which will take place from August 6-10, create a brochure publicizing all programs for children and youth which take place in our church and to reach out into the community to provide collaboration with other like-minded groups as we fulfill our mission. Please feel free to join our group! Our next quarterly meeting will be publicized in the church newsletter and bulletin. All are welcome!

Come join this exciting experience!

Operation Christmas Child
Our recommended Operation Christmas Child collection items for June are TOYS! All shoeboxes should have some fun items since the recipients are KIDS, after all! Lots of items fit into this category, including Slinkys, jumpropes, dolls, and--my personal favorite--soccer balls. Soccer balls are said to be one of the favorite shoebox items to receive, as many children can play with them together. If you do include a soccer ball, make sure you also include an air pump/needle, since the ball must be deflated to fit in the shoebox! Five Below is a good source for inexpensive soccer balls and air pumps can be found at Dollar Tree sometimes.
Keep collecting items every month so you will be ready for shoebox collection week, November 12-19!
If you would like more information about Operation Christmas Child or would like to become more involved, please contact me:

United Methodist Women

On May 21st the UMW celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Methodist Church and the 150th anniversary of the United Methodist Women with a fun evening of food, fun and fellowship. Since this was our special Charter Night program, we also honored our two Lifetime Members Edna Harrison and Arlene Stanton. Both lovely ladies were in attendance and as always, were enjoying themselves. Edna and Arlene were honored for their many years of service to the UMW and to our church.
We have completed the 150 health kits to be delivered to the Virginia Annual Conference meeting in Hampton in June. These kits will be delivered by UMCOR to all points of the globe and we appreciate your support and cash donations to make this mission project possible.
Just a reminder that there are new books in the UMW lending library in the Grundy Parlor.  For those of you who are participating in the UMW Reading Program, please take a look at the new selections. If you aren't already in the program, please join us and start educating yourself on the many programs of the United Methodist Women.

Our next meeting is scheduled for June 25th at 7PM in the Grundy Parlor. The program for the evening is our annual Candle Burning program. This is the time of the year that we honor individuals or groups that have been special in our lives. A donation can be made In Honor Of or In Memory Of these individuals or groups. In this June newsletter you will find a form to be completed with all the details. This form will also be included in several Sunday bulletins prior to June 25th to give you an opportunity to participate. All donations will be accepted for our mission work around the world. If you have any questions, please call Doris Morefield or Mattie Rogers.

If you are interested in joining the UMW, please give me a call or just show up at one of our meetings. Our meetings are always open to the women of the church and we would love to see you.

On June 25th, the United Methodist Women will be presenting their Candle Burning Program in honor of or in memory of special people in their lives or their loved ones. We would like to invite each of you to participate by honoring someone that is presently an important part of your life or someone who has passed away, but influenced your life in a meaningful way. You can honor friends, loved ones or groups of people.
There is no set amount for a donation, just whatever you would like to give.  All the proceeds from the program go direct to missions and will not be kept on the local UMW level. The Candle Burning Ceremony will be repeated on the district and conference levels to further honor those that have been recognized on the local church level.
To participate, please complete this form, attach your check and put in the offering plate no later than Sunday, June 24th. We would love to include you and those individuals special in your life during this very special UMW meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Doris Morefield or Mattie Rogers

The Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Men met May 15th at the River's Bend Grill. We always meet the third Tuesday in each month. We look forward to welcoming any men from the church to our meetings. You don't have to make reservations, just come.
Thank you to every one who worked on the May 19th fish fry and all of you who attended a very successful event. We are pleased to report that we raised $500.00 to be used toward future projects.

We are pleased to report that the wood fencing around the air conditioning units have been replaced with vinyl fencing and that project has now been completed. Also, several small repairs have been completed. If you see something that needs to be done in and around the church, please don't hesitate to let a member of the UMM know. The UMM will be working with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts to see if they will help with yard clean up.

We continue to encourage you to let us know if there are needs by some of our church members who aren't feeling well or are not physically able to do manual labor around their homes. The men of the UMM are willing to help with lawn mowing, trimming shrubs, etc. We already have serviced several lawn mowers. Please contact any member of the UMM or Pastor Mike if you need help.
Our next meeting has been changed to Monday, June 25th, 6:30PM at the River's Bend Grill .   All men of the church are invited to attend and participate in our projects. We enjoy a meal together, a devotional and lots of discussion on upcoming and new projects. Without a doubt, you will enjoy the fellowship. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.
