Fabbro Industries Design Build Approach Spans Bespoke Bikes to One of a Kind Furniture Design

Terence Musto and I recently were asked to be on the same crit panel for a group of student projects at Union College organized by Professor Lorriane Cox PhD. His business acumen was evident in the feedback he provided to the project teams and when I found out what he did, a studio visit was destined to happen. The story of Fabbro Industries is highly relevant and emblematic of the current national narrative to bring more entrepreneurial manufacturing to our country. A renaissance creative, Terence has his hands in a wonderful diversity of projects including currently rolling out a touring bicycle design to machining specific parts for a project at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. All from his shop in Vorheesville.

"Customers need to be willing to pay more to have things made in America. It’s expensive to make things here. One of our biggest challenges, in addition to finding qualified labor, is being able to afford all of the required insurances and benefits that fabricators need which is tough." Terence Musto : Owner / Creator at Fabbro Industries

Elizabeth Waxes Philosophic on the Merits & Challenges of a Tech Driven Future

Happenstantially I ran across an old friend recently at Jamel Mosely's Whiskey Pickle and as frequently happens at night in such places, a deep conversation ensued. This one was on the merits and challenges of AI's impact on creativity. So good it was, I had to invite Elizabeth Quinn Gray, who is currently the Associate Director of the AI and Society Research Center at the University of Albany to have a chat over the kitchen table about where she sees the technology going and its impact on arts, culture and the human condition.

"With the AISRC, we don't want to invite in the humanists, the social scientists, the artists and other creatives to the AI discussion. We want the humanists, the social scientists, the creatives and the artists to LEAD the discussion, to identify those things that we need to be paying attention to, to understand what matters in order to know how to protect what matters." Elizabeth Quinn Gray : Associate Director at the AI and Society Research Center

PROMPTING WITH GRACE

ACE! was onsight at Niskayuna High School for NYSATA (New York State Teachers Association) Region 6 Media Arts Fest and Awards Ceremony. We decided to invite some friends over including 518 Film Network's Spencer Sherry and AND Casting's Annie Delano to discuss practical paths to getting experience and paid work in the regional film industry.

The student films were impressive and we were all excited about the creative and meaningful approaches the students were taking in their film making endeavors. Looking forward to next year's ceremony!

INSIDE ACE! | CREATING A NEW PATH

Couple of really different perspectives juxtapositioned in this months interviews. First up Terence Musto Owner at Fabbro Industries, a boots on the ground design build machine shop with some impressive work. This seemed like an important story to me as we as a country figure out what Made in America actually can mean in our current context, specifically as it applies to specialized trade work. This is set against my kitchen conversation with Elizabeth Quinn Gray, current Associate Director of the AI and Society Research Center at University at Albany. As many of you who follow this newsletter know, I have had a strong interest in the ongoing impacts of AI specifically on our creative communities. Elizabeth brings a pragmatic approach to the conversation that feels strategic and hopeful.

As always, if you have any cool creative job listings, open calls, industry news or grant funding opportunities, drop me a line and get them included in our next issue.
