11-20-18 Meeting

Meeting called to order by President Rachel Toomey. 

Total attendance; 23, members-20, other Kiwanis members-2, Lt. Governor Mick Shelldrake, Bob Kemper (N.C), Guests-1; Speaker Melanie Musick.  

50/50 winner was Todd Adams. Anyone can participate in the 50/50 and win the instant winnings however only club members are eligible to take chance to pull the ace of hearts if their ticket is drawn.

Happy dollars; Sheriff Lindsey collected dollars for the speaker, happy to be here, friends, Thanksgiving, John's birthday, Tip Off Tourney. 




Thanks Lt. Governor Mick for delivering a check from the Cape Coral Club to our club for our co-sponsorship with the CKI club at FGCU.

Administrative Committee Meeting is at 6pm on the 27th. See Lindsey if you are interested!

Rayma Page Elementary is seeking judges for their Invention Convention on December 4th from 12:30pm-1:30pm. No prior experience necessary. Student inventors share and explain their inventions. Interested? Contact Dennette Foy 239-432-2737 or DennetteTF@LeeSchools.net by November 27th. 

Fundraising committee-Paul reported flyers for our BUG Chase 5K are going to be sent to everyone. Sign up is open for participants to sign up. Sponsors are still available. Thanks to the Cape Coral Club for your Grasshopper sponsorship.

We received 3 thank you notes; Kiwanis International for our annual contribution to the Children's Fund, Bruce Boyd for our annual donation to the FL Foundation fund, current grants are providing assistance to clubs in the panhandle with shelters, food and water from the hurricane, the third from Luvy Bears for our donation to their agency for the Kiwanis One Day project this year.

The Salvation Army-Bell Ringing  Our date this year is November 29th. We'll be ringing at the Publix Store at South Pointe off College Ave. Volunteers will be covering shifts from 9:00am-7:00pm. We met our minimum of 2 members per shift signed up. There is still time to come and volunteer. Show up anytime between 9:00am and 7:00pm, ring an hour or two, you decide.  If you have questions just ask Kim.  Thank you to ; 9-11am Barbara Hartman and Everett Shell, 11am-1pm Liz Ross and Stewart Ross, 1pm-3pm Ed Ludden and Bill Grant, 3pm-5pm Cathy Smith and Linda Petrik, 5pm-7pm Connie Prevatt, Karen Hurst, Todd Adams and grandsons. 

Oasis Reading Room- (Stewart Ross). We are only reading on December 5th for the month of December. Weekly reading at Orangewood Elementary on Wednesdays (except on designated school holidays) to first and second grade youth. Times are 1:50pm-2:30pm (you have two different youth during this time). Literacy Buddy-Early Learning Coalition-Enroll https://elcofswfl.org  on the application mention you are affiliated with our club. It's not to late to sign up. 

MS Support Group- (Bill Grant), meets 3rd Thursday of the month at St. Hilary Episcopal Church. The holiday party we are assisting with is Dec. 20th. Set up is 2:30pm-4:30pm, event starts 4:30pm. Many hands are needed for this one, please sign up with Bill. 

Breakfast with Santa; The date is December 15th. Rachel is circulating the volunteer sign up sheet.

                     CHECK OUT WHAT OUR YOUNG LEADERS ARE UP TO!

Aktion Club-(Karen Hurst) at LARC. Meets 2nd Tuesday at 8:30am. Next meeting is Dec. 11th. They are collecting hygiene items for their next service project. Give them to Karen. 

CKI Club  FGCU.  Looking for a club member to take on advisor role for this club. Can you help? See Rachel or Lindsey.

Key Club- ( Harris Segel) Collegiate High on FSW campus. They facilitated a school-wide project for Unicef. They are currently collecting empty shoeboxes and items to fill them such as small toys, hygiene items, etc. Give them to Harris.

Builder's Club-( Barbara Hartman, Todd Adams, Ada Trapanese) Cypress Lake Middle School. Meets 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 4:00pm. Asst. Principal is member of the Cape Coral Club, T-shirts issued, 2 helped at Trunk or Treat for a short time, they are collecting canned food for the FGCU food pantry. 

K-Kids-( Kim Berghs) Littleton Elementary at 2:15pm on Wednesdays 1-2 times per month. 
Next meeting is November 28th. They will be working on the Christmas ornaments for Gold Wing and school personnel.

This agency has been around for 29 years and in SWFL for 1 year. There are 20 different schools (chapters) in SWFL. Best Buddies is a 501 (c)(3)
organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Programs empower the special abilities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
