October 2019 Newsletter
Halloween will be here soon. Some people like to be frightened…when it’s make-believe. But for some served by DRS, their fears are all too real. How they are going to survive is often their driving concern. Together with DRS staff, they dare to dream of a better future…to thrive, not just survive. Read on to learn more.
Thank You Note From a Grateful Consumer
Sherree has a lot on her plate. She is dealing with her own health and disability issues. And now she has sole responsibility for raising two grandchildren, ages 6 and 8. By necessity, she’s become an excellent self-advocate, finding resources in her new home town.
Through Serve 6.8, a faith-based resource for area churches, Sherree learned of DRS and how it can sometimes help people move to homes better suited to their disabilities. She contacted DRS. Arrangements were made and the move took place, something she didn’t know how she could get done since she has no family or friends nearby to help. With gratitude, she wrote this note:

Top 4 Needs of People Who are Disabled and Homeless

Each person who is homeless has his/her own top needs. Here are four of the most common:

1. Housing
2. Funding for deposits and application fees
3. Vital Documents (birth certificate, ID, Social Security cards for all members of the household)Housing
4. Wrap around services for when they do get housed (basic resources/things that may be needed once the individual or family is housed, such as medical transportation, bus passes, furniture, clothing, food)
DRS Staff Member Nominated for Commission on Disability Award
Every year the Commission on Disability presents Community Recognition Awards. The awards, presented by Wade Troxell, Fort Collins Mayor, recognize individuals, businesses and agencies in our community who work to enrich the lives of people with disabilities. This year there are eight categories.
DRS Staff member Denise Meyer was nominated for the 2019 Employee of the Year award. This recognizes an individual who embraces his/her daily call to do impactful, life-changing work for and with people with disabilities. Though another nominee was selected, we’re proud of Denise and the outstanding assistance she gives to her consumers!
