Welcoming Guests from Kibbutz Sufa

May 10

Zohar Hubara and Hadas Grinshpan, survivors of the attack of October 7 on Kibbutz Sufa, will be guests of Beth David on Shabbat May 10. They will be speaking on Shabbat afternoon at 7:15pm and will then entertain Q&A during Seudah Shelishit.

Zohar and Hadas are grandparents of seven grandchildren and have lived on Sufa since its beginnings in the Sinai. Sadly, their son Ido was murdered on Oct 7th in Zohar’s arms. They are coming to share their story and hope for the future as they get to know our community.

Zohar is 67 years old and a member of the Absorption Committee (welcoming new families to the kibbutz). He will address Sufa's location on the border with the Palestinian Authority and Egypt, its small and high-quality community, and the challenges of distance, absorption, and employment. He will note the new challenge posed by the events of October 7th and the need for a strong community and supportive environment.

Hadas is 65 years old and the Coordinator of Welfare and Individual Support.  She describes Kibbutz Sufa as a small and friendly Kibbutz located at the southern and remote end of Israel, with about 70 households. She will emphasize the importance of human connections and empathy in the relationship between communities.

Food Drive

Our Shavuot Food Drive has started. There are bins in the shul lobby where nonperishable items may be left. Our goal is 613 items, the number of mitzvot in the Torah. We currently have approximately 70 food items collected. After Shavuot, these items will be donated to the JFS Kosher Food Pantry as well as the West Hartford Food Bank. On the second day of Shavuot, our youngest members will revive the Beth David "bikurim" pageant carrying baskets of canned fruits into the sanctuary. Parents, please sign up for "bikurim" basket activity below.
