Tzedakah Project
Replenish the Pantries Food Drive
During these challenging times we know that food insecurity is, unfortunately, a huge concern in many families. There are families who are utilizing food banks for the first time. Local food pantries are experiencing exceptionally high demand and facing critical shortages. This is due, in part, to the rise in unemployment and homelessness in our community linked to Covid19. The food pantries do a fantastic job of providing for those in need but they need help keeping their pantries stocked.
Beth El congregants are invited to join the Religious School for the Tzedakah Project. We are looking forward to the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of members of our community.
Details and suggestions:
- Food will be collected at Beth El December 2-3. Members of the education committee will transport to the collection site. The food is then distributed to over 20 local food pantries.
- What is needed (but not limited to):
NO fresh items, anything packaged in glass or anything with an expired date

Episode 2
When I was...
When I was in my early 40’s (that was a long time ago and I just fast-forwarded some 27 years), I remember carpooling, back and forth, two kids to Hebrew School Tuesdays and Thursdays, and all three to Sunday school, dropping off the two and taking the third to soccer practice, circling back to pick up our other two at Temple, and circling back again to pick up the third from soccer. This circuitous route put 38 miles on the car and plenty of speeding tickets on my Jersey license. Oh, but those were the days! After our daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, and having had my fill of speeding tickets, we decided to join our local synagogue 3 blocks from our house. No more tickets, our insurance premium went way, way down, I got an “A” on my state-mandated driving school rehab course, and with time to spare, I became Membership Chair, then Vice President, and, later, President of that synagogue. Believe me, I had no intention of becoming so involved. But they asked, and I accepted. Sure, there were frustrations. It was challenging, sometimes even aggravating but the friendships, camaraderie, the sense of purpose, the achievements, the caring all filled some part for me. And, here I am again, back as Membership Chair. They called, I accepted. But, we need more than me. Can we count on you? Not for anything overwhelming. Not for assuming a committee head position. Not for anything other than a small step forward. Every little step helps us connect to you and the greater community. We have a drive to replenish the food bank for 20 non-profits, feeding those less fortunate. I now shop the “Buy One, Get One”, saving one for us and one for this food drive. Our wonderful students initiated this drive to give back to their community. This is a wonderful project in which ALL of Beth El can help support. A description of what is needed and times for drop-off are listed above. Please help out if you can.
