Here are some great pictures from last week's Mega Challah Bake. Thank you to everyone who participated and to Tammy Shumer for organizing it.
Our 24 year old stove is gone. Handle came off in my hand, one of the back burners wasn’t consistently working and oven didn’t produce “even’” heat. All this within a month. Okay… now what? I went out and bought a convection oven (hopefully ovens are a standard size or else it’s “take-out” for another month). Do I have to recalculate oven settings? I figure a calculator will be positioned right next to the stove as some type of decorative touch. We’ll see what happens. Which reminds me of our first Thanksgiving dinner in Queens with Lew’s family in our 3.5 room walk-up apartment. I was cooking my first turkey. Clarification. The only thing I had ever cooked was scrambled eggs, but I am so observant. I had watched my grandmother and mother in the kitchen, so I felt fairly comfortable about the evening’s menu. Turkey, sweet potato pie, “dressing” (in the North that’s stuffing), cranberry sauce (Ocean Spray of course) and the misnamed Northern “stuffing”. Everything turned out well…except for the turkey which came out rare. What, you say? I had the oven door ajar...except I didn’t know that what I had observed was ‘broiling”. To the point of all this…we got through it and come out the other side. It’s what we have done here at Beth EL. Five B’nai Mitzvahs coming up. Services open for attendance. I’d love to see you there!
