Board Member Spotlight: Karen H. Toker, MD

Karen Toker, a retired pediatrician and one of Beth El’s Vice-Presidents, has been a member of Beth El for almost 28 years. She and her husband Cyril joined Beth El in July of 1991, just a few months after it was formed. Karen originally was on the Religious Committee and helped organize the Onegs and Kiddushim for several years when the synagogue was meeting at the Ribault Garden Club. Karen’s step-father and mother, Samuel and Nedra Harkavy-Miller, gave the first Torah to Beth El, and Karen and Cyril donated the crown and breast plate for the Torah at that time. It wasn’t until Karen retired as a pediatrician from the University of Florida and the Duval County Health Department in June of 2003, however, that she finally had more time to devote to Beth El administration. She served as Secretary of the Synagogue Board from 2004-2006 and as First Vice-President and Chair of the Publicity (Communications) Committee from 2006-2008. Under her tenure as Publicity Committee Chair, she launched a contest to name the Beth El Bulletin, with the name Hakol, The Voice of Beth El receiving the winning number of votes. She spearheaded the revision of the Constitution and Bylaws in 2005 and organized the Donor Wall in the entryway. From 2008-2009 she served first as Vice-President and then President. During her presidency she oversaw the transition of Beth El from a Conservative to a Reform synagogue including the adoption of a new set of Bylaws. After serving her term as Past President from 2009-2011, she left the synagogue board, but has returned as a Vice-President for the 2018-2019 year. She is interested in strategic planning and leadership development and presently also chairs the Archives Committee. Karen was married to Cyril, a retired surgical pathologist and attorney until his death in 2015, and she has two children, David, a neurologist, and Rachel, a real estate attorney, and four grandchildren.

Observations:
Having been on previous Boards, both here and New Jersey, we are all the same; we care, we are constantly looking for ideas, and we would love your involvement.
▪ Our Membership Committee always looks for new programs and fun things to do. Can you help out?
▪ New Member Shabbat - welcoming new members to Beth El is so rewarding - watching our future right now in the present! Mazel Tov, Rabbi and Joy....awesome evening! And, Welcome New Members!
▪ Watch the eblast highlighting individual Board member's bio's - we are so diverse we thought you should know who we are!
▪ Sisterhood rocks! Check out all their activities!
▪ Laurie Simmons - our cantorial soloist - your devotion and caring are unmatched and we don't say it enough - Thank You!
Just noticed my favorite punctuation mark is the exclamation point...perhaps I should curtail its use! No, can't do that! That would temper how I feel!
