Please share with us what you believe is most important about our congregation and the qualities you think are most important for us to have in our next rabbi. Welcoming the Stranger Mitzvah Project. Beth El the Beaches Synagogue and Beth El Sisterhood are partnering with Lutheran Social Services, the resettlement agency here in Jacksonville, to help Afghan refugees. As you probably know, these families that are arriving in Jacksonville have been vetted multiple times and have received special visas for their work with the US government. Because of their work, they would be in grave danger in Afghanistan under the Taliban.
We are collecting monetary donations and gift cards for them. Many refugees arrive with almost nothing. There have been generous donations in the last few weeks, but our friends at Lutheran have advised us that there is still a huge need for food items to stock the pantries and refrigerators.
You can use this link to purchase an Instacart gift card. https://a.co/d52SLbN. You will be asked for the recipient’s email. Enter laura.cook@lssjax.org. Laura is the Senior Refugees Services Program Manager. She writes, “When they purchase it, can they please send me an email afterwards with their name, address, and email? Unfortunately, e-cards do not display anything but the donor’s name. We would love to thank them and send a tax exempt donation form.”
Or mail a donation, marked “refugee assistance” to Beth El the Beaches Synagogue, 288 N Roscoe Blvd, Ponte Vedra Beach 32082. Publix and Walmart gift cards are also appreciated.

Looking at
the T.V. the other night, I saw all the potential hurricanes out in the Atlantic which obviously caused me to review the “Hurricane Preparedness” list on the side of the refrigerator. When we moved from Jersey, we thought we’d better get our act together and make a list of absolutely invaluable items to gather if we had to bolt. That was 1994…an update was surely needed. So in reviewing that list last night, I tried to figure out how long it would take me to collect all these items and put in the car. The way I figure the time involved is easy…3 minutes to get flashlights, lanterns (don’t forget the chargers). Wait… let me check the lanterns. One doesn’t charge and the other doesn’t have (or I can’t find) the charger. Added to the list is shopping for more lanterns that work and one WITH a charger. So, I’m at 3 minutes and counting. Getting the extra car keys, 30 seconds and counting, move the lawn furniture and BBQ pit into the garage (duh…got rid of all that) so, now I’m to the good for at least 30 minutes. I’ll catalogue the rest tomorrow, but this brings me to my final thought…I really do wind down, chill, and reflect at services, because I need that pause.
