Garrett Hobbs Bar Mitzvah

Garrett Hobbs will become a Bar Mitzvah on November 11, 2023. This is such a meaningful moment in his life, and we are all so proud of his decision.

Garrett is a ninth grader at Gulf Breeze High School. He has been playing trombone since 6th grade and enjoys marching with the Soundwave. He hopes to take a gap year after high school to work in Australia where he has an aunt, uncle, and cousins and then return to attend Oklahoma State University.

For his tzedakah project, Garrett is collecting new children’s pajamas and books to donate to the Pajama Program, a nonprofit that supports children facing adversity, like housing insecurity and family instability, get a good night’s sleep. They deliver programs and services to create a comforting bedtime routine, allowing children to get the sleep they need, which contributes to their health, social and emotional well-being, and school performance.

Garrett’s choice to become Bar Mitzvah reflects his commitment to his Jewish life. He is deeply thankful for those in the Temple Beth El community who have been a part of this journey. We hope you can join us in celebrating Garrett on this important day.

A Message from the Social Justice Committee

The Social Justice committee needs your help! We are starting off the new year with several exciting events. We hope you will join us for one (or all!) of the following:

  • Social Justice Team Meeting | Sunday, November 5 | 10:00am

Interested in making a difference in the lives of our Pensacola neighbors? Join us at Temple Beth El for our Social Justice Team meeting. Together we will discuss details for upcoming projects with Manna Food Bank and Brentwood Elementary, as well as brainstorm ideas for future projects. For more information, contact Chuck Lisner.

  • TBE Volunteers at Manna Food Bank | Monday, November 20 and Thursday, November 30 | 9:00am-12:00pm

This month marks Manna Food Bank's annual "Fill the Mayflower" event, which is always a huge success. As a result, Manna will need our help sorting the donated food. Manna Food Bank distributes food to every zip code in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, serving neighbors from all walks of life and numerous groups in our community. Sixty-six percent of all people served last year were children. We are able to accommodate up to 12 volunteers 18 years or older. Closed-toed shoes are required. To sign up for either date, please contact Deborah Buchalter or Bill Zimmern.

  • The Angel Tree at Brentwood Elementary

Donations for children will be needed in the form of clothes, toys, electronics, etc. For additional information or to sign up please contact Sharon Marcus.

  • Community Cookout | December 22

Our neighbors at Gross and Schuster will once again provide warm meals during their annual Community Cookout. For more information or to volunteer please contact Terry Gross.

Have a sweet and happy New Year,

Deborah Buchalter, Social Justice Team
