Isabella Petersen

will become a Bat Mitzvah

Saturday, August 26

9:45 a.m.

Isabella “Bella” Sophia Petersen is the daughter of Gabriela & Kevin Petersen. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Ivanova Rodriguez of Columbia, Dr. Jaime Arbona of El Paso, TX, Gary & Elizabeth Petersen of Houston, TX and JoAnn Petersen of Houston, TX. Isabella is a rising eighth grader at Heathwood Hall. This is her first year at Heathwood. Prior to that she studied at the Montessori School of Columbia.

Isabella devotes most of her energies to her passions of dance, music, art, and school. She has been dancing ballet since she was three years old at the Columbia Ballet School and enjoys performing in their annual “Nutcracker Ballet.” Currently, she is spending three weeks in an intensive summer program at the Cary Ballet Conservatory working on advancing her ballet technique, as well as modern and contemporary dance.

Isabella has also been playing piano and singing since she was four years old. When she is not immersed in her passions you will find her spending time with close friends and family, reading books, drawing and painting or traveling.

For Bella’s Bat Mitzvah project, she has decided to collect needed items for the NICU at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital. For those who would like to contribute to her project, gift cards for NICU families may be purchased through Beth Shalom or you can make a donation in her honor at:

https://give.prismahealthmidlandsfoundation.org/campaign/prisma-health-midlands-foundation/c307044

The Petersen family invites the Beth Shalom congregation to share in this special simcha and joining them for a Kiddush luncheon honoring Isabella following services.

Holocaust on Film

Friday, August 11, 2023

12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

This engaging program surveys and discusses the ways in which the Holocaust has been represented in cinema. Join us for a lively discussion of the film, Varian's War. Please watch the film before attending this online program. You can find the film at the Richland Public Library.

Varian's War - The story of Varian Fry. During World War II, he constructed an elaborate underground rescue network saving some of the most influential figures of that era, including painter Marc Chagall. Presented by Matthew Creighton.

Matthew Creighton is a lecturer at Boston University in both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of General Studies. In the summer of 2021 he received his PhD in Religion and Literature at the University of Chicago Divinity School, after having completed a dissertation on the representation of father-son relations in German literature. At BU he has taught courses on Holocaust representation across literature and film, American oratory, and the history of Western culture.
