Bethany Weekly News
06/21/21 | Issue VIII.1.21
Thank you so much for worshipping with us this week. Above you can find the video of yesterday's Scholarship Sunday service. Pastor Adkins-Jones preached "Level Up" from 1 Corinthians 13:8-13. His sermon begins at 1:14:40 (1 hour, 14 minutes, and 40 seconds).

Congratulations to our pastor, Rev. Timothy L. Adkins-Jones, Ph.D., on graduating from Boston University School of Theology, having earned the Doctor of Philosophy in Homiletics. We are so proud of you and grateful to finally have had the opportunity to honor you in person.

"The Doors of the Church are Open" - Re-Entry Protocol
We are officially back to in-person worship! As you plan to attend services, please be sure to watch this video to be aware of our new, CDC-compliant, re-entry procedure. Beginning this week, we will return to two Sunday morning services at 8 am and 11 am. Registration for each week's service will open on Tuesday mornings at 10 am and close on Friday evenings at 5 pm. Please note that we only have room for 100 people in each service.

If you can’t make it in person, we will still be streaming on YouTube, Facebook, and our website. We look forward to seeing you soon, whether virtually or in person.
Health Workshops Offered by Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition through Faithful Families, Thriving Communities - LAST SESSION TOMORROW
Bethany has partnered with the Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition for another year for Faithful Families, Thriving Communities workshops. The workshops will aid families in planning, shopping, and preparing healthy meals on a budget while exploring ways to be physically active during the day. There is still room for more to attend.

Please call the church office or email covidinfo@bethany-newark.org to sign up.
Summer 2021 Write On Sports Camp for Grades 6-10

Write on Sports Online Summer 2021 will run virtually for four weeks in July, and we expect students to participate in classes for one or two hours a day, four days a week. During scheduled meetings, students will get support and feedback on their chosen projects (e.g., feature stories, videos, podcasts, fiction stories). Students will also be able to schedule additional one-on-one meetings with staff. We will also welcome guest athletes and journalists to speak about their profession and give an opportunity for students to interview them directly.

We understand that students will have spent a lot of time on the computers during the school year, so we will combine a limited amount of direct instruction with time for students to work on their own or together with other students. We expect much of the work to be self-directed, with Write on Sports staff providing tailored support. We will still share students’ projects on the Write on Sports website and via a virtual press conference on the last day of camp.
Bethany Cares, Inc. Golf Classic
Bethany Cares, Inc. invite you to join us on Monday, July 19 at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club in Livingston, NJ for a fun-filled day of networking and challenging golf in support of our mission as the nonprofit arm of Bethany Baptist Church - Newark. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Freedom School summer academic enrichment program.

COVID-19 Care Packages
Because we care, the COVID-19 Task Force will be mailing care packages for those who test positive for COVID-19. If you or someone you love receives a positive test result, call the church office to include their name on the list or email covidinfo@bethany-newark.org.
Vaccine Encouragement: #ImVaccinated
As the COVID-19 vaccines become available, you might be asking yourself, "Should I get it?", and that's a valid question. Science and scientists prove that the vaccine (Moderna and Pfizer) works and reduces the harshness of COVID-19. Members of Bethany have been vaccinated, and we are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated or even consider vaccination.
If you or someone you love needs to schedule an appointment, you may email Rev. Shawn Torres-Anderson at covidinfo@bethany-newark.org or call the church office. Join us in helping Bethany to beat COVID so that you can join in when they sing "reunited and it feels so good."
COVID-19 Funeral Assistance

The FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance program has begun. In this program, any family member who paid for a COVID-19 related funeral can be reimbursed for up to $7,000. Please keep your funeral documentation and visit FEMA.gov to learn more about the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance program.
COVID-19 Hotline

The state has established a hotline – 855-568-0545 – for New Jersey residents seeking support or information on the COVID-19 Vaccine — including information on how to register and schedule an appointment.

The vaccine call center is now live and agents will be available from 8AM—8PM.

The COVID-19 Vaccination is Now Available

New Jersey now has an online portal that enables you to register for a vaccine. Once you are eligible to receive the vaccine, you will be notified and can then find a vaccination site, pre-register, and schedule an appointment. Some vaccination sites may offer walk-up/on-site registration as well when doses are more readily available. Visit covidvaccine.nj.gov to register.

The COVID-19 Mobile Alert App

Currently, there is a surge in the number of positive cases of the COVID-19 Virus in our community.

The NJ Department of Health is working to decrease the spread by strongly encouraging the use of the COVID Alert App.

They are also working to dispel the myths that prevent us from taking advantage of this tool to save lives.

Once the APP is downloaded it provides multiple services to a person who has tested positive.

It can also alert another App user if they have come in close contact with one who has tested positive.

Please take advantage of this tool. It can be downloaded through Google Play Store and the App Store.
Addressing the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dear Bethany family,

As the COVID-19 strain of the Coronavirus spreads, it is in our interest to keep you informed and protected. We encourage you to practice proper hygiene habits and be careful when interacting with others. Here are some precautions to take:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or cough or sneeze into your elbow.
  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Instead of shaking hands, greet others with a fist bump, elbow bump, "Wakanda Forever," or anything that does not require direct physical contact.
  • Do not use your fingertips to touch shared surfaces. For example, you may use paper towels to open doors, press elevator buttons, etc.
  • Keep hand sanitizer and disinfectants within reach and in locations you frequently access, such as the entrance to your home, your car, and any personal bags that you carry.
  • Stock up on medications and other essentials you may need in the event of quarantine, such as nonperishable food items.

We especially encourage our Seniors to take extra precautions, as data has proven that they are most at risk of catching the Coronavirus.

In addition, we as a church have taken steps to increase the availability of hand sanitizers in common spaces.

Although we are no longer having in-person meetings, please join us live in worship on our YouTube channel and at bethany-newark.org. You may also give securely online through our website. In the midst of these uncertain times, we want you to be able to worship with us as you always do, except from the comfort of your own home. Please be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel, and click the icon that looks like a bell in order to receive all notifications in real-time.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We pray for your protection during this time, and for a safe and full recovery for anyone who has been infected.
