The new Directors bring decades of leadership in key areas such as talent acquisition, strateg y i mplementation, fundraising, and financial management to the Bethlehem University Foundation Board of Directors.   Directors of the Board are elected for a 3-year terms during which they are charged with the governance of the Bethlehem University Foundation. Board Members are permitted to serve three terms. Members of the Board must be confirmed by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
 
In addition to Elected Directors, the Foundation By-Laws appoint 4 Ex Officio Directors who serve as Directors of the Board while in their respective positions. The Ex Officio Directors are: the Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, the Vice President for Advancement at Bethlehem University, the Chair of the International Board of Regents of Bethlehem University, and the Executive Director of the Bethlehem University Foundation.
 
Finally, in recognition of years of meritorious service, the Board of Directors of the Foundation can appoint by resolution Emeriti Directors from among its retired Directors. There are currently 3 Emeriti Directors.

Elected Directors
Mr. George Felton 
 Director of College Player Personnel for the San Antonio Spurs 
George began his career coaching college basketball, which led to his career in the NBA. Currently he is the Director of College Player Personnel for the five-time world champions, San Antonio Spurs. He holds both a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in Special Education. In addition to coaching, he speaks to student groups, players and coaches on his message of the Four Circles of Life: Spiritual, Academics, Social/Career, and Athletics/Health. Mr. Felton considers it his mission to share the inspiring story of Bethlehem University with his friends.
The Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas, Ph.D.
Bishop Emeritus of Tucson
Bishop Kicanas was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1967. Following Ordination, he earned an M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago in 1995 and Bishop of Tucson in March of 2003. 
Bishop Kicanas has been a tireless advocate on behalf of immigrants, the poor, and for peace among the peoples of the Middle East. His Episcopal Motto is “Justice Begets Peace.”
Brother Michael O’Hern, FSC
 President Emeritus of Christian Brothers Investment Services Inc.
Brother Michael is a Catholic educator and President Emeritus of Christian Brother Investment Services. He headed CBIS for 28 years. He guided the investments of multiple religious orders and organizations, ensuring the ethical use of invested funds, and challenged corporate entities to act with justice according to Catholic Social Teaching. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Lewis University for work done on Catholic Responsible Investing. He serves on multiple boards of Lasallian institutions and is on the Board of the International Catholic Stewardship Council.

Ex Officio Director

Brother Belayneh Medhanit FSC, Ed.D .

Vice President for Advancement at Bethlehem University joins the Board as an Ex Officio Director.

Brother Belayneh Medhanit FSC, Ed.D. is a De La Salle Christian Brother who is currently serving Bethlehem University as Vice President for Advancement. Brother Belayneh served as a Sector Coordinator of Ethiopia for De La Salle Christian Brothers, a board member of the Ethiopian Catholic Church Social and Development Commission (ECC-SDCO) and Metemamen Microfinance Institution, in addition to his role as an instructor and Vice president for Academic Affairs of the Ethiopian Catholic Higher learning Institute (ECUSTA).
Earlier, Brother Belayneh served as principal of three K-12 schools including St. Joseph School in Addis Ababa.
Brother Belayneh received his Undergraduate and Masters education at Lewis University, in Illinois and his Ed.D. St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. His Doctoral dissertation is published as a book entitled “The old wine in a new skin: Acculturation experiences and Socialization pattern of Ethiopian immigrant students in US – What is lost what is found”

Emeriti Director
Dr. Samir Abu-Ghazaleh

Retired Gynecological Oncologist

Dr. Samir Abu-Ghazeleh was elected as an Emeritus director of the Board in recognition of his 11 years of service on the Board of Directors and in appreciation for his years of generous support of the Bethlehem University Foundation. 

Born in Haifa, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh earned a MB.B, Ch. Degree (equivalent to M.D.) from the Ain Shams University Medical School in Cairo, after receiving his undergraduate degree from Nahara College in Cairo, Egypt. He completed residencies and graduate work in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Dakota Affiliated Hospitals and in Gynecologic Oncology at Duke University Medical Center. He then established a private practice in South Dakota.
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh has over four decades of experience as a gynecologic oncologist and is the author of numerous articles on gynecology and oncology. From 2000-2006, he was appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board. He is a member of the Board of Governors for the Arab Western Institute, a member of the Advisory Board of the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation, and a Board Member of the American Task Force on Palestine. Dr. and Mrs. Abu-Ghazaleh are Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh is a member of the Order of Malta.
Dr. Samir and Mrs. Mary Abu-Ghazeleh are Legacy Patrons of the Bethlehem University Foundation, and are the underwriters of the Foundation Patrons. 
In addition to five new appointments to the Board of Directors, Bethlehem University Foundation welcomes two new staff members to the team,
Ayanna DaCosta and Ronald Hays.
Ayanna DaCosta, Development Associate & Social Media Coordinator

Ayanna provides development assistance and social media support to Bethlehem University Foundation. Ayanna is from Connecticut and has worked in the nonprofit community in Connecticut as a development and program consultant. She received her BA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut with a focus on human rights. Ayanna developed a strong sense of devotion for international education when she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova .

Ronald Hays, Controller

Ron became the first Controller of Bethlehem University Foundation in 2019. With an accounting degree from the University of Wyoming and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Ron brings over 25 years of finance and accounting experience to the Foundation.  Ron also works with Catholic Charities and Catholic University to bring free tax preparation services to deserving residents in the District of Columbia. He is on the Parish Council and sings with the contemporary choir at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Derwood, Maryland.
