In Step with Betty Ford: A Celebration of Her Centennial
|
At 5:00 p.m. on April 10,
opens a new exhibit on
Betty Bloomer Ford, born on April 8, 1918.
You are invited to the 5:00 pm ribbon cutting
and to view the centennial exhibit afterward.
|
|
The exhibit covers her life from childhood, to graduation from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1936, to her days as a dance student and model, to marriage and a mother of four, to a congressman's wife and First Lady.
The Betty Ford centennial exhibit features more than 150 artifacts and documents, many never before displayed. In addition to artifacts from the National Archives, the exhibit will include items on loan from the Grand Rapids Public Museum and historical images reproduced from a special collection at the Grand Rapids Public Library.
|
|
Artifacts include a program from a production at Fountain Street Church that Betty Ford choreographed where she interpreted songs from the Bible into dance; the itinerary of the day Betty Ford, representing the Nixon administration when Jerry was vice-president, attended the funeral of Alberta King, mother of Martin Luther King Jr.; and a personal letter from her husband when she was hospitalized.
Details: Ribbon cutting at 5:00 p.m., Gerald R. Ford Museum, 303 Pearl St NW, April 10, 2018. Daughter Susan Ford Bales will be on hand for the ribbon cutting.

Suffragist Exhibit in Holland
open Now through August
|
|
Atmosphere of Distinction
Now Through September 1, 2018
A new exhibit opened in March at the Holland Museum (
see location and hours) displaying how the emergence of the women's rights movement impacted West Michigan fashion trends and how it reflected women's changing roles American life. During the twentieth century, women throughout the country took great strides toward equality and began abandoning their traditional roles, as well as restrictive fashions, in search of greater opportunity and comfortable clothing.
|
|
Throughout the months of the exhibit, the museum is sponsoring programs related to the exhibit: Two now on the
museum's website: April 26,
The Importance of the League of Women Voters, tracing the story from suffrage associations to the League, and on May 24,
Patriots and Petticoats, with Caitlyn Perry Dial, director of the Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame, tracing the history of the women’s rights movement from its beginnings among abolitionists and Quakers through the final passage of the 19th amendment.
On July 26 and August 23, two members of the GGRWHC will present.
Watch for updates.
