Spotlight On:

Bach Concert
In recent years, there has been a plethora of birthday festivities in the form of concerts around J.S. Bach's birthday on March 21. This year, his 336th happens to fall on a Sunday, and since live performances still aren't possible, Heinrich will offer a virtual organ recital which will premiere on King's Chapel YouTube channel at 5:00 PM. The program runs about 45 minutes and will be followed by a Bacchanal (please bring/peel your own grapes!) on Zoom, please register here.

The works featured are Sonata 1 in E Flat Major, Chorale Partita on Sei gegrüßet, and the Concerto in d minor which Bach transcribed for organ from Vivald's original for two violins. As the program goes along, Heinrich will offer program notes piecemeal in the YouTube chat. We know some of our audience has had trouble finding the chat in the past, likely explanations might be that you are viewing the video full screen so there is no room for the chat(ter)box, or that YouTube wants you to sign in so you can comment. It all seems to depend on what device/platform you are using to watch the video.

If you are busy on the 21st, never fear, the recital will remain available to view even after the premiere.
From the Minister

My Dear Friends--

As we approach the fifth and final Sunday of Lent, its purple seems more appropriate than ever. For in addition to repentance and solemnity, purple is also the color of mourning. This week we mourn the passing of Pam Bergeron, a beloved member of our King's Chapel community. We hold in our prayers her husband, Mike, whom she married here at King's Chapel, and her daughter Caroline, who grew up in our Church School. We also mourn the deaths of the eight people killed in the Atlanta spa shootings this week, six of them women of Asian descent. We travel the way to Calvary with a sorrow born of fresh loss, in our church and in our world.

In this darkness before the dawn of Easter, God speaks to us again of covenant and love--of writing Godself in our very hearts. I am reminded of Joanna Macy's words as found in our Lenten Guide for this week: "We must be alive to our world, even when its suffering breaks our heart. Because when the heart breaks, it can break open." Would that God's love and mercy find a home in our broken hearts.

In faith and love,
David

History Talk TONIGHT!| Henry Caner's King's Chapel: Loyalism & Evacuation in Revolutionary Boston | Thursday, March 18  at 5:30 PM
In his nearly 30 years as Minister of King's Chapel, the Reverend Henry Caner presided over the chapel during a critical era of the church's history. Little did he know, however, that his tenure would end abruptly amidst the American Revolution and pave the way for religious revolution within the church. In observance of Evacuation Day on March 17, this program will discuss narratives of King's Chapel members who fled Boston as Loyalist refugees in March 1776. Join History Program Director Faye Charpentier to learn more about what this historic event meant for members of this church community and for a special look at the life, legacy, career, and controversies of King's Chapel's last Anglican minister, Rev. Henry Caner.

This program is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated. Please register in advance here.
Lenten Journey Fellowship Hour, Fridays at 5:00 PM during Lent

Tomorrow, March 19th, please join us at 5:00 PM for our fourth fellowship gathering. The theme for this week is The Great Reset and the hosts will be Julie Hyde and Betsy Peterson. You can find a rich set of scripture, prayer, readings, and more in your Lenten 2021 booklet (available online  here.) Please register in advance here.

Our fifth and final fellowship gathering happens next Friday, March 26th at 5:00 PM. The theme will be Faithful Citizenship: "In this last week, we contemplate how to live with greater integrity and character in an unpredictable and often unjust world that is offering us an evolutionary moment. How do we overcome our culture of excessive materialism and individualism and embrace our duty to the human community and planet as an essential part of faithful citizenship?" You can register in advance here.

From the Bench

In honor of J.S. Bach's 336th birthday (and of course to get you all warmed up for the organ recital in the afternoon), we will have a spot of Bach for Morning Prayer this Sunday. Soloists Emily Bieber-Harris and Alison LaRosa will offer a duet from Cantata 78, playing the roles of two eager servants/disciples ready to rush off and follow Jesus, echoing David's sermon.
Prelude and postlude are also by Bach. Throughout the service, the choir appears in various quartets this week, as the entire gang is already hard at work recording music for our Easter service which will be chock full of music!
