  Back to School!
school_supplies_desk.jpg
Summer is so much fun, but as it winds down there is some relief that soon the kids will be back to a normal routine. Our childcare situation in the summer tends to be very scattered, which causes some stress. Knowing that soon I will be doing one drop off in the morning and one pick up in the afternoon seems so much easier.

For those of you that commute, remember to leave a little earlier in the morning starting mid-August. School drop off will definitely increase the number of cars on the road in the morning!

Wishing everyone a great start to the school year!

Robert Frost grew up here in San Francisco. He was born in the city in 1874; father William edited the San Francisco Evening Bulletin.

".....Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. "

New Veranda Shopping Center
I'm so excited about the New Veranda Shopping Center under construction in Concord on Diamond Blvd (it used to be the Chevron Campus). There are tons of rumors about what shops are going to be in there (could be as many as 50 tenants). Lots of exciting things happening which is great for the city and the economy (Great for home values too!). I just saw an article in the East Bay times (from July 20th) that has an updated list. Below is what they know so far:

  • Cinema West IMAX luxury movie theater with food and a bar will be the second IMAX theater in Contra Costa County, joining AMC Brentwood 14. (THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT!!)

  • 365 by Whole Foods Market, the upscale grocer’s chain of affordable stores offering high-quality brands and Whole Foods’ 365 Everyday Value line. Through the “Friends of 365” program, local entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to secure space inside the grocery stores to hawk prepared food, specialty merchandise or services.

  • Super Duper Burgers, a San Francisco-based chain that serves burgers, fries, shakes (you can get them spiked!), house-made pickles, breakfast sandwiches and donuts.

  •  Peet’s Coffee

  • Toys ‘R Us, which has a location in Pleasant Hill directly across Interstate 680. The company declined to disclose its plans for the existing store other than to say it will remain open until further notice.

  • TJ Maxx also has a store in Pleasant Hill on Pleasant Hill Road.

  • Cost Plus World Market has a store next door in the Willows.

  • Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar, a stylish chain with eight locations in the Sacramento area, including in Roseville, Davis and Elk Grove.

There is also rumored to be a Sephora...woo-hoo!

Recipe of the Month
This is more of an adult recipe (unless your kids are more adventurous eaters than mine) You may have to make them PB & J or Turkey Sandwiches and then make this recipe for yourself. It has just been so hot lately, sometimes I don't want to turn on the oven or stove. This is a great no-cook dinner option!

Statement Ceilings
I have seen ceilings with amazing texture on Fixer Upper, but I did not realize that it was becoming a trend for those of us not on TV ;) Country Living has some great ideas on ways to accent your ceiling and make the focus when visitors walk in the door. Some ideas from Country Living:

Textured Wallpaper
Tin or embossed foam ceiling tile
Shiplap
Wooden beams
Bold paint color

This is a great way to totally update the look of the room!!

  Hot Summer Nights Car Show

If you have never been to the Hot Summer Nights Car Show in Danville, you should totally check it out. I don't really consider myself a "car" person, but I can still appreciate these beautifully restored amazing hot rods. There is also great music and food. Plus, the streets in Downtown Danville are shut down to street traffic so it's fun to just walk around and check out the shops! It takes place Thursday August 10th from 2-9pm. It's fun!

  Walnut Creek First Wednesdays
Wednesday August 2nd, September 6th and October 4th!

This cool new street fest takes place in Walnut Creek on Cypress Street between Main St & Locust St from 5:30 - 8:30pm. There is food, drinks and entertainment.

For those interested in attending on August 2nd, it is a Wild "Wild" West theme featuring the Lindsay Wildlife Experience and live entertainment from the Steel Rose Band!

If you have topics about our local East Bay scene that you would like to see covered in Beyond the Fence, please send me an email at janel@pelositeam.com and I'll do my best to include your suggestions.
