Beyond the Nest! Introducing Experiential Education at AHS

January 10, 2024

Students and Families,

Happy New Year and welcome back to the Nest after what I hope was a wonderful winter break! I'm emailing to introduce myself and Animas High School's newest program, Experiential Education. Please read on to learn more about all the cool stuff we're doing to foster "Beyond the Nest" opportunities for our Ospreys!

What is Experiential Education (AKA: Ex. Ed)?

Experiential Education is the process of learning by doing. By engaging students in hands-on experiences and reflection, they are better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

Experiential learning opportunities exist in a variety of course- and non-course-based forms and may include service learning, outdoor education, civic engagement, study abroad, and work-based learning experiences such as LINK Internships, to name a few.

When students participate in experiential education opportunities, they gain:

  • A better understanding of academic content
  • A broader view of the world and an appreciation of community
  • Insight into their own skills, interests, passions, and values
  • Opportunities to collaborate with diverse organizations and people
  • Positive professional practices and skill sets
  • The gratification of assisting in meeting community needs
  • Sense of belonging and purpose
  • Self-confidence and leadership skills

Why Ex. Ed. at AHS?

We believe that a strong sense of purpose and belonging (to the natural and human worlds) are essential elements in fostering mental well-being and agency necessary to bring about positive change. The Animas High School Experiential Education Program was created to actualize that reality for each of our students by using the power of immersion in wild places and engaging experiential learning opportunities to support our school’s mission and values.

Since our school’s founding, we have facilitated many experiential learning opportunities that have had a positive impact on school culture and individual student growth, including Osprey Weeks, LINK Internships, grade-level camping trips, and more! Our project-based model prioritizes hands-on, real-world learning. Authentic challenge in a supportive environment, whether it’s in the classroom or out in the field, is key to our model’s success.

This year, I was leaping with joy to come back to the Nest as the new Dean of Experiential Education to collaborate with teachers, outdoor educators, local businesses, community organizations, and mental/behavioral health specialists in order to create a truly unique and comprehensive program that involves outdoor adventure, service learning, and civic engagement opportunities for all AHS students. After 10 years of teaching Humanities at AHS, I'm thrilled to be working toward the Ex. Ed. mission!

 Program Mission

Enhance Animas students’ high school journey through inclusive experiential education opportunities that foster community engagement, leadership, and well-being. We do this through the power of wilderness-based, service, and hands-on learning experiences.
