MISSION SPOTLIGHT: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church - Davison
Davison-St. Andrew's mission options reflect an understanding of our demographics. We have learned that small numbers, an aging congregation, no active youth, physical limitations, health constraints, and limited resources do not prevent us from serving others in Christ’s name.
On-Going: Since 2009, our “Knitters/Crocheters/Quilters” have given their materials, money, time, and talent, while annually, on average, creating/donating 280-300 packaged, hand-made hat/glove/scarf sets and 25 - 30 prayer shawls, custom crocheted blankets, and/or quilts. Those able gather weekly, while others work at home; sometimes, we use FaceTime or conference calls to “be all together.” Local agencies in Davison, Flint, and Lapeer distribute these gifts - often coupling them with coat distributions. Others, we give to hospitalized/homebound people. Regular mission updates and informal conversations in the community have resulted in additional donations from members/friends who do not knit/crochet/quilt, and women from other churches and communities participating as well.
Annually, St. Andrew’s contributes financially to 11 local agencies that help those suffering from food insecurity and poverty. We also deliver monthly collections of food, clothing, and household products, and extra collections for school supplies, food for the holidays, and we provide Christmas gifts for 25+ children. A “Support Church” for Family Promise of Mid-Michigan, for 10 years we provided/served dinners at HOST churches. For 3 years and to continue, we participated in the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) Mobile Food Packing event at the Richfield Church of the Nazarene. The letters, emails, and newsletters from the agencies express overwhelming gratitude for our donations and hands-on service.
Something New: In an effort to leverage scarce resources and encourage others to help, this November, St. Andrew’s has established a “matching fund” where the church will match “extra giving” from our congregation/friends up to $2,000. The total monies donated to St. Andrew’s by December 15, 2025, designated for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (FBEM), will then be given to the FBEM. They will promote that total as another “matching fund” opportunity in January, providing a flyer with a QR code, linking directly to the on-line giving page, or gifts may be mailed or dropped off - clearly designated for the “St. Andrew’s Match.” As we work together with the FBEM, we are pleased to help them be able to serve more of the increasing number of food-insecure families.
