Dear Prayer Partner,

In March our Bible a Month calendar is focusing on Uruguay .

Uruguay is a South American country which boarders Brazil and Argentina. It claims to be the birthplace of the Tango (as does Argentina!) and they have the longest national anthem in the world.

The Bible Society in Uruguay are involved in projects including translating the Bible into Uruguayan Sign Language, working with families in rural areas and with children across the country.

In this Extra Insight we'll tell you more about the "Draw y Own Bible" project and the impact it is having on young lives in Uruguay.

Ministry in Uruguay

Uruguay is becoming increasingly secular, with more liberal laws and values. There has also been an increase in substance abuse, corruption and violence in recent years. By law, it is not permitted to speak about God in public schools, but there is religious freedom in the country.
Despite these changes in society, Christianity is still growing and spreading amongst the people. The Bible Society in Uruguay is working to help bring the Gospel to the people in their society and to show them God’s love. Their goal is to provide Scriptures in different formats and versions, which serve all people, and allow them to access God’s Word. They pray that they will be able to positively impact their community and that God will use their activities to lead people to himself.
"Draw My Own Bible" - Uruguay
The poverty rate in Uruguay is very high and many children are from difficult backgrounds or must work to help support their family, missing out on schooling. These children face poor hygiene, lack of food, abuse and many more terrible problems they should not have to deal with.

Often children are sent to Sunday School, as it is seen as somewhere where good morals are taught and where food will be provided. The churches in Uruguay have been challenged to help these children by providing food during Sunday School lessons, making sure they are spiritually fed, as well physically.

Sunday School teachers often play the role of educator, caregiver and counsellor to these children. The “Draw My Own Bible” project, organised by the Bible Society in Uruguay, allows children who have little or no literacy to listen to Bible stories and learn about what they’ve heard through drawing. They work through the “Draw My Own Bible” book, which has plenty of space for drawing and colouring the stories they have heard. Training is also provided to Sunday School teachers so that they can properly help the children with the issues they are facing.

In 2019 they had several children who are participating in this project give their lives to Jesus! It is through this simple way of displaying God’s love and teaching the Gospel that many thousands of children are hearing the Gospel!

" Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God."
Luke 18:16 (NIV)
Pray for this Project

Here are some of the ways you can pray for this project:

  • Pray for the children who participate in this project. Ask God that he would protect them in their home lives and that the stories they learn about in Sunday School would touch their hearts.

  • Pray for the Sunday School teachers who lead this programme. Pray that God would bless them in their work and that they would be able to show Christ’s love to these children.

  • Pray that this project would make an impact on the wider society of Uruguay, and that this upcoming generation would be a generation who fears the Lord.

Every £5 donated to this project will help the Bible Society of Uruguay to run the "Draw My Own Bible" project and provide resources and support for Sunday School lessons.
