Dear Prayer Partner

This month we are focusing on Bulgaria and a project to bring Scriptures to children living in orphanages. Bulgaria has one of the highest numbers of institutionalised children with around 25,000 children living in state run orphanages. The Bulgarian Bible Society works to provide age appropriate Bibles and books for children so that they too can learn about God's love for them.

Capital: Sofia

Population: 7,057,504 (July 2018 est.)

Official language: Bulgarian

Religion: Christian - 80% of the population

Bulgaria became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime.

Ministry to young people is crucial. The current generation differs greatly from their Communist-era parents and grandparents.   It is estimated that most Bulgarians are exposed to the Gospel through mass media.

Ministry in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country, which although is in Europe, and even in the EU, is in Eastern Europe and that refers to much more than just a geographical location. Being a post-communist country, it has challenges in spreading the Bible and faith. The atheistic communist regime alienated people from the Bible and the church and now there is a second and sometimes third generation that have grown up without the Bible. Combining this with a strained economic climate, people feel they are geographically in Europe but are still far away from it in the way that Europeans live. The Bible cause and the church has to overcome many other things that try to get people's attention.

Large numbers of children are in state run orphanages and need to know God's love. The Bible Society distributes children's Bibles and other books with Bible stories. Often the Bible Society will collaborate with other Christian groups who are delivering clothes, shoes and food to the orphanages. The love of God is revealed through the books and demonstrated by the visits to the Children's homes.

Bible based discussions are organised for older children and puppet shows and drama are used with the younger children. Children growing up in these institutions do not receive the same attention as a child growing up in a family unit might, they crave attention and enjoy the times when the Bible Society staff are present with them. The input from the Bible Society staff and volunteers also helps the children to learn about moral standards from the Bible which are useful for future life.

Scripture and Shoes

At Christmas time in 2018 the Bible Society partnered with a local church to provide Scripture booklets and shoes to children in an orphanage.

The church congregation and the Bible Society travelled to a village about 130 km from Sofia and gave our new shoes with Bibles and other Bible materials.

  • Pray for the children and their life in the orphanages.

  • Pray for the distribution of Children's Bibles and Children's books among the children in such homes.

  • Pray for the teachers and the staff of the children's homes - they need to be touched also by the Word of God

  • Pray for the Bible Society team as they distribute the Children's Bibles and books.
