Dear Prayer Partner

Christmas can be a very busy time for everyone. There's plenty of presents to buy, friends and family to catch up with and food to cook!

But we encourage you during this busy holiday season to take time to pray for our Christian brothers and sisters around the world. We have received updates from projects across the world in December.
This month in Prayer News we are looking at how we can pray for Northern Ireland, Eswatini and Honduras.

Thank you for joining us in prayer.

BIBLE 2020 – Northern Ireland

BIBLE 2020 is a Bible engagement app for smartphones and tablets which has the vision to see everyone, everywhere reading the Bible aloud every day in 2020. This app allows you to record yourself reading a daily passage of Scripture, and upload it to a global wall, where you can watch other Christians reading that same passage of Scripture in their own language.

The Bible talks about reading Scripture aloud in several places including 2 Kings 23:2, Jeremiah 36:6 and Deuteronomy 31:11, and scholars tell us that Paul’s letters would have been read to their recipients. We should also be trying to read the Bible aloud as often as we can.

If you don’t have access to a smartphone or tablet, don’t worry; the reading plan will be available on our website and in our Word at Work magazine throughout 2020. You don’t have to record yourself to benefit from reading the Bible out loud!

We are very excited for this app and how it can help the people of Northern Ireland engage with their Bible. We would love for you to get involved, whether that’s individually, as a family or as a church group!

Pray for this project:

  • Ask God to use this project to help people better engage with His Word. Pray that through reading passages aloud people would be encouraged and strengthened in their faiths.

  • Pray that through sharing on social media many would hear the Bible that would not normally come into contact with it. Pray that it would have an impact on these people’s lives as they hear their friends and family reading God’s Word.

  • Pray for the other countries across the world who are also participating in BIBLE 2020. Pray that those who participate would be bold in their sharing of the Bible and that they would grow in their own personal faiths.

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Joshua 1:8
The Swati Study Bible - Eswatini

The church in Eswatini has expressed a desire for a Study Bible to be produced for the people. This Bible is to be used by church leaders and their congregants, to help Christians understand their Bible better. Often Pastors do not have the theological resources to write their sermons and it is hoped that this study Bible will help them not to misinterpret the message.

The work on the SiSwati New Testament was has been going on for several years. They have completed the Gospel of Luke and it has been well received by church leaders. Since the Gospel of Luke has become available more and more leaders have become interested in the project and excitement is growing for the launch of the full Bible.
People are excited to have a Study Bible in their own language. It is the hope of the Bible Society that not only will this reach the church leaders, but also their congregants in their own personal study of the Bible. Many in rural areas do not speak English and are longing to study the Bible in SiSwati.

Please pray for the SiSwati Study Bible:

  • Pray for those translating and writing the Bible. Ask for wisdom as they prepare the notes and that it would be an accurate translation, easy for SiSwati speakers to understand.

  • Pray that those who receive a Study Bible would be blessed by it and that they would be able to use it to grow deeper in their relationship with God.

  • Pray that the project would continue to receive enough financial support. Thank the Lord for those supporting this project, both prayerfully and financially.
"The Most Dangerous Country in the World" - Honduras

The Bible Society of Honduras is working alongside the government to help positively influence the men and women involved in the police and army by giving out scriptures and Bibles to officers. As well as this, a Bible-based teaching manual has been designed on principles and values, set to be implemented in police units nationwide. Officers are encouraged to read their Bibles and many have come to faith.

Through teaching the Biblical perspective of justice and introducing officers to Christ it is hoped that the police will be able to show compassion to their fellow Hondurans and act as witnesses for Christ.

The Bible Society of Honduras is pleased to update us that the prayer days of the Inter-Institutional National Security Force (FUSINA) continue to be held in the 18 states of Honduras once a month. In each meeting the Word of God is preached and those attending are exposed to the Gospel. Many of these police officers are holding additional devotional meetings once a week to further study the Bible.
Pray for Honduras:

  • Pray that the national police continue to be influenced by the principles and values in the Word of God.
  • Pray that through this project corruption among the police would drop and that it would begin to shape the Honduran society as a whole.
  • Pray for the safety of the Bible Society staff in Honduras as they work in one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Pray that they would be able to show God’s love to those they come into contact with.

  • Pray for the team of Bible Society translators in Nigeria as they work to make the Bible available under the threat of Boko Haram.

  • Praise God for the beginning of the translation of the Parables into Sri Lanka Sign Language. Pray that this project will reach those with hearing impairments with the Gospel.

  • Pray for the Ceylon Bible Society as they run their Healing Wounds of Trauma project among children and young people. Pray that those who participate would be touched by God's Love for them.
Pray for the team

  • Thank God for the year we have had and the projects we have been able to support throughout 2019.

  • Pray for the year ahead as we continue to support Bible translation, engagement and distribution around the world. Pray that the team would come back refreshed from the Christmas holidays and that they would be able to serve God well in 2020.
