Dear Prayer Partner

Proverbs 3:5 famously tells us to “trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” It can be hard not to get swept away by the negative images and stories on the news, to lean on our own understanding of events. At times we feel that the world we live in has fallen to chaos.

But as Proverbs states we must rely on God, the one who spoke the world into being and knows all the days of our lives. Even though we do not know the future, God has it under control.

This month in Prayer News we are looking at how we can pray for
Uganda, Jordan and China.

Thank you for joining us in prayer.

Pictured above: The Bible Society of Uganda's Braille project is adapting to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Last month we had a prayer meeting over Zoom for our projects around the world. It was so great to see so many of your faces and to pray with you about the Bible Society work going on. We are having another prayer Zoom at 1PM on Wednesday the 24th June, if you would like to come, the link to the meeting can be found here:

This meeting will last approximately 30 minutes. We as a staff team were so encouraged last month and would love to meet with you all again.

If you are unsure about how to join a Zoom meeting, please contact us and we can help you to access it.
Scriptures for those with Visual Impairments - Uganda

Like many countries Uganda has also imposed a nationwide lockdown. Large social gatherings are prohibited and churches are no longer allowed to meet. The Bible Society of Uganda was worried about the future of the Scriptures for those with Visual Impairments project. They wondered how they would be able to provide Scripture and help those with visual impairments to engage in services and worship. However, like many things God had a plan!

The Bible Society of Uganda has been able to work with local churches to promote the Word of God through televised services. In May, several services were led in their Bible reading by a young girl, Phiona, who is visually impaired. She has learnt Braille from a young age and is a very confident reader. Our colleague commented that while many of us would have been nervous, Phiona was excited and took it in her stride.

This allowed the Bible Society of Uganda to show that although someone may have a visual impairment, this does not mean that they cannot engage in a service. Nearly 3 million people in Uganda are able to tune into these services, and the Bible Society hopes that this will help churches in Uganda to become more inclusive to those with disabilities.
Pray for this project:

  • Pray for people like Phiona who are able to engage more in church services through Braille Bibles. Praise God that they can now read Scripture for themselves and that they will be able to continue to grow in their own personal faiths.

  • Pray for those who do not yet have access to Scripture in Braille. This can be isolating as they need someone to read to them to hear the Bible. Pray that they would be able to access a Braille Bible soon.

  • Pray for those who are reached by the televised services. Pray that God would soften their hearts and that they would show compassion to those with disabilities or impairments and that the church would become more inclusive to them.
An Update from Jordan

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bible Society in Jordan have been given special permission by the government there to provide food packages to those in need. The Bible Society in Jordan have been able to reach 2,500 families with basic essentials over the last two months.

Most importantly, within these packages were Bibles. While some of those who received packages were already Christians, many are refugees who have never heard the Gospel. These families are poor and find it difficult to get work or an education and are especially vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bible Society in Jordan wants to show God’s love to these people through providing them with aid and Scripture. Please join us in praying for this programme as it has the potential to have a serious positive impact on the refugee community in Jordan.
Please pray for this project:
  • Pray for those who receive these packages. Pray that they would read the Bible and that they would understand the message within it. Pray that God would use this situation to bring more people to him.

  • Pray for safety of the Bible Society staff and volunteers as they carry out this project amidst the COVID-19 outbreak . Pray that God would protect them and that they would remain healthy .

  • Pray for all those around the world who are currently living in refugee camps or other close conditions, who do not have the luxury of being able to socially isolate themselves.
Bibles for China's Millions - China

The Bibles for China’s Millions project aims to provide Scripture to Christians throughout the country. Last week we had the privilege of having an update from our partners in China and how the work has been continuing over these last few months.

China was the first country to be seriously impacted by COVID-19, with a lockdown having been imposed as early as January. The China Partnership and Amity Printing Press had to shut down many of their operations to comply with the lockdown.

The China Partnership was able to continue engaging Christians through social media and other online ministries. This was great for those who had access to a smartphone, however for those in more rural areas it was harder to get resources to them. Thankfully, now many of the lockdown restrictions have been lifted and the China Partnership can resume reaching these people with resources. The “Beyond Disaster” resource produced by the American Bible Society has been translated into Chinese and 100,000 copies were printed. So far 70,000 have been distributed and they are hoping to do an additional printing run of this resource.

Amity Printing Press was able to reopen and have begun to resume printing Bibles. Our colleagues in the China Partnership tell us that on the 30th May churches were allowed to reopen following social distance guidelines and with appropriate PPE- a very exciting development! In another exciting news the China Partnership and Amity Printing Press have renewed their partnership for the next 10 years.
Pray for this project:

  • Pray for the church as a whole in China as they continue to reach out to their communities and be a witness to their friends and families. Pray that God would bring people to him through this situation.

  • Pray for the Bible Society staff and volunteers as they take steps towards normal life. Pray that God would keep them in good health and that they would be able to continue serving him.

  • Pray for the staff at the Amity Printing Press, that they too would remain healthy and able to carry out their work. Pray that God would bless their work printing Bibles.
  • Thank God that the Bible Society of Armenia has been able to reach young people through an online Bible quiz. Over 60 schools took part throughout May.

  • Pray for the Bible Society of Kenya as they reach out to street children, providing them with food throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Pray for the Thailand Bible society as they launch “Young Scribe” a project that is walking school pupils through the book of Ezekiel during their lockdown.
Pray for the team

  • Play for the BSNI staff team and board as we discuss what the future will look like as we begin to prepare for returning to the office. Pray that God would guide us, and we would know the right time and safety precautions to take.

  • Praise God for all of the positives we have experienced over the last few months. Praise God for the support he has continued to provide us with and that we are still able to support so many projects around the world.
