Dear Prayer Partner

There is a lot of change in nature during this time of year. The trees are loosing their leaves and we see summer is well and truly gone.
One of our recent readings from the Daily Bible Reading Guide was Lamentations 3. In verses 22-23 the author talks about God's love never ceasing and His mercies never coming to an end. A great reminder during this season that things on earth will pass away, but only God is eternal and unchanging!
This month in Prayer News we are looking at how we can pray for the Gulf States, Jordan and China.

Thank you for joining us in prayer.

You're Invited to The Gathering!

We'd also love to see you at our annual supporters event, "The Gathering" on the 8th November at 7.30pm in High Kirk Presbyterian, Ballymena.

We will be having Simon Peter Mukhama, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda, to share about his work in Africa and we will be launching Bible 2020, our exciting new Bible engagement project for Northern Ireland.

Working with Church Leaders in the Gulf States

We have recently heard from Hrayr, the General Secretary of the Bible Society in the Gulf States. Bible Society NI supports a project in the Gulf States that trains leaders, both illiterate and semi-illiterate, in story telling and preaching the Gospel.

Hrayr recently went to a labour camp in Bahrain where a church has been planted for the workers, in partnership with the Hebron Telugu church. They had been provided with a storeroom in the camp for a while but were asked to move when it was needed by the camp administration. With nowhere else to go they decided to meet on the seashore. Hrayr spent 3 evenings with the church leaders, equipping them with Bible stories and talking with them about their work. One of the leaders of the church, Pastor John, shared with Hrayr “I want to tell you about Prakash who accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour after I shared the Good News with him through a Story. Thank you for training me.” Praise the Lord that this work is bearing fruit in Bahrain.

The International Telugu Church Leaders Meeting was a 3-day event held recently, bringing together 162 Telugu speaking church leaders from 9 countries. There were representatives from 5 of the 7 Gulf states, as well as about 250 local church leaders. They took time to report back from many of the congregations represented, by which Hrayr was greatly encouraged.

Pray for the work among the people of the Gulf States:

  • Pray that leaders would be able to shepherd their congregations well. Ask God that He would strengthen them and encourage them in their work.

  •  Many of the churches in the Gulf do not have a permanent building or meeting place. Pray that those who do not have a permanent place to worship would remain faithful and continue to meet together.

  • Pray that God would give Christians the boldness to speak to their friends, family and neighbours. Ask God that He would bring many to Him.
Bibles for China's Millions

This year Bible Society NI has been supporting the Chinese Partnership and Amity Printing Company in China through the supply of Bible paper, enabling them to print and distribute Bibles all over the country. This project also funds free Bibles to provide one to those who cannot afford to buy their own. Below is a testimony from Yuan Guiying (pictured) who received one of these Bibles.

Yuan Guiying is a 65-year-old grandmother from Hengshui City, Hebei Province. Throughout her life she had little interest in God until her son-in-law became seriously ill. After he was healed, she began to explore the Christian faith and what it could mean in her life. She began attending church and eventually decided to follow Christ, yet she didn’t have her own Bible.

In 2018 Hengshui Christian Council received 300 free Bibles from the United Bible Societies “Bibles for China’s Millions” project. Most were given to those exploring the faith. Yuan was one of those who received a Bible.

Yuan will never forget the day she beheld her first Bible, which she received shortly after her baptism in 2018. “This is my first Bible. I was a little overwhelmed when I held it in my hands, thinking to myself that this is no ordinary book, it is the Word of God!” She recalled with delight, adding, “Now my favourite pastime is reading the Bible. The Word of God gave me real satisfaction and joy which cannot be derived from dancing or winning at mah-jong tables.”

Yuan also enjoys memorising the scriptures, sharing with us her favourite memory verse. “My favourite verse in the Bible is from Psalm 91:14 ‘Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.’ That’s why I changed from loving the world to loving God.”
Please pray for China and the printing of Bibles:

  • Pray that the Amity Printing Company would be able to continue printing Bibles. Pray that the government continues to allow them to operate.

  • Pray that those who receive Bibles would be impacted and would grow in their faiths as a result of studying God's Word.

  • Pray for the church in China as they face growing pressure from the government and sinicization. Pray that they would be rooted in God's Word and be strengthened by it.
Amman International Book Fair in Jordan

Every year the Bible Society in Jordan has a stand at the Amman International Book Fair.

The fair is attended by many people from different cultures and religions, with an estimated 250,000 people visiting the fair each year. They are the only Christian organisation among the 350 international publishers, and it is a great privilege for them to represent God’s Word in this situation.

At the book fair they sell Bibles, Christian resources and portions of Scripture at affordable prices. It is a fantastic opportunity to provide Bibles to those who might not have had access before or have never considered buying one. It is also great for Christians to be able to have access to these resources.

There are a few things they have asked us to pray for:

  • Pray that each person that heard, listened or took some Scripture would be challenged by it and that they would be drawn to the message of the Bible.

  • Pray that those who have questions on the Christian faith would have the courage to reach out and ask. Pray that God would provide them with wise people to answer them.

  • Pray for the safety and protection of the Bible Society staff and volunteers at this event. Ask that God would make them bold and that they would be able to talk to as many people as they can.

  • Pray for the Bible Society of Malawi and their literacy programme. They recently completed a translation of the Bible in Yao and are now working to make sure everyone in the community has access to it.

  • Pray for the French Bible Society and their "Hack My Bible" project. This project hopes to engage young people with the Bible through new technologies and platforms.

  • Pray for the Slovak Bible Society as they continue to work on their Slovak Sign Language translation.
