From the Director

I hope everyone’s year is off to a good start. As the days grow longer, so do your opportunities for learning and discovery at the D. Samuel Gottesman Library. In this issue of Biblioblast, we're excited to share a variety of resources and services designed to enhance your research journey.

Our monthly training calendar is packed with classes (held via Zoom) to help you use the library’s resources effectively. Topics include: systematic reviews, Covidence, PolicyMap, PubMed, EndNote, and Mendeley. On February 13 we will add a new class to our rotation, an introduction to Scite.ai. On March 10, we will partner with the Office of Faculty Development for a lunchtime session, Library Tasting Table, providing an overview of the library’s many services and resources.

Our ebook collection continues to grow. In January we added new titles from McGraw Hill’s AccessSurgery and AccessObGyn collection. We are also in the process of adding new ebooks published by Springer Nature and the American Psychiatric Association. Search Einstein Discover to explore ebooks and more.

If you happen to be on the Einstein campus during the next few weeks, stop by first floor of Forchheimer to check out our annual Einstein Authors exhibit, highlighting books and book chapters authored by Einstein faculty.

Remember, the D. Samuel Gottesman Library is more than just a repository of ebooks and ejournals. It's a vibrant hub of learning, collaboration, and intellectual exchange. Our staff is here to support academic, research and clinical pursuits. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or requests.

Check out our Faculty Authors Exhibit

Publishing is an important component of the work that many of our faculty do, so the Library’s latest exhibit spotlights recent books – both print and electronic – that were authored, edited, or contributed to by Einstein/Montefiore faculty members. It includes texts on psychiatry, dentistry, cancer therapy, and more, as well as books on medical education and achieving equity in healthcare.

The exhibit will be on display in the Library lobby on the first floor of the Forchheimer Building through February so stop by to see what you colleagues have been up to!

The Library Now Subscribes to Scite.ai!

The D. Samuel Gottesman Library recently started a subscription to Scite.ai, an AI-powered research platform that analyzes and provides citation context for scientific papers. The Scite database contains over 1.2 billion citations and 185 million full-text articles from the peer-reviewed literature.

The platform assists researchers in evaluating the credibility and impact of scholarly articles. Students can ask questions in plain language and get answers with easily verifiable citations drawn directly from the full text of research articles, while faculty members looking to assess their impact can check Smart Citation metrics at the level of articles, journals, organizations, and funders.

While other AI tools may generate “hallucinations” and false or misleading references, Scite’s references come from scholarly literature and offer details on the underlying sources. Scite is also designed specifically for scientific questions, rather than being a general-purpose tool like ChatGPT or Bard.

Some key features of Scite include:

  • Smart Citations: Scite's flagship feature, Smart Citations, provides contextual information about cited articles, helping researchers understand whether the cited work supports or contradicts the current research.
  • Citation Context: This tool provides detailed citation context, allowing users to see how specific sections of an article are cited in other research papers.
  • Citation Reports: Scite provides reports and visualizations that offer insights into citation patterns and trends, helping researchers identify influential articles and authors.
  • Researcher Profiles: Users can create profiles to showcase their research, track their citations, and connect with other researchers in their field. Email alerts and ORCID integration let you track new citations and see if others have found evidence that supports or contrasts your work.
  • Research Dashboards: Keep track of emerging citations to trending topics and research areas with custom research dashboards. Get updates when a study gets supported, contrasted, or receives a new editorial notice such as retracted or withdrawn.

In addition, Scite offers a browser extension that integrates with Chrome, Firefox, or Safari and allows you to easily see how articles have been cited anywhere you’re reading online.

You can learn more about Scite and how to get started with this new and innovative tool in our research guide. You can also join our Scite.ai training session on February 13th at 4 pm, which will show you how to:

  • Create a Scite account
  • Search Scite effectively using the Basic Search and the AI assistant
  • Understand how Scite’s AI assistant differs from other AI tools
  • Interpret citations in context

Already taking advantage of Scite? We want to know more about how our students, postdocs, faculty, and other community members are using the platform – and what you think about it. So please give us your thoughts in this short feedback survey.

PolicyMap and Purged Federal Agency Data

On Friday January 31, numerous essential datasets were purged from federal agency websites, including data from CDC PLACES (Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates), the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), and the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST).

While we are uncertain when or if this data will return, PolicyMap has stated its commitment to keeping this data accessible on its platform.

PolicyMap proactively collects and preserves the most recent datasets from federal sources, ensuring they are integrated into its platform. Historic periods are maintained and available as well.

Data that was recently removed by the federal government is available in PolicyMap.

To learn how to put your data on a map, sign up for our PolicyMap class on March 19, 2025.

Resource Spotlight: Access Surgery & AccessObGyn

The Library has recently purchased a site license for two additional Access titles from McGraw Hill: AccessSurgery and AccessObGyn.

AccessSurgery features hundreds of books, ABSITE review resources, review questions, cases, videos, interactive 3D modules and more. Each type of content is available via dropdown menus at the top of the page.

Featured books available on AccessSurgery include Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, 11e, Current Diagnosis & Treatment: Surgery, 16th Edition, and The General Surgeon’s Guide to Passing the Oral Boards.

Click on Video & Audio to access surgical procedure videos from Zollingers Video Atlas of Surgical Operations. You will see a menu of topics from which to choose. Selecting "Appendix," for example, gives you five videos including "Conventional (or Open) Appendectomy: Incision and Exposure."

The Study Tools section includes ABSITE Review, Interactive 3D Modules, and Resource Collections such as Surgery Clerkship Corner.

AccessObGyn includes hundreds of books, review questions, cases, videos and more.

The Books dropdown menu allows you to select from a variety of specialties including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics, and Sonography. There is also a link to 2 minute medicine, featuring high-impact reports curated and written by practicing physicians on the recent medical studies.

Study Tools includes an interactive Female Reproductive System Module. The module presents several clips of various disorders which can present in the female reproductive system.
