All of us at the D. Samuel Gottesman Library offer our congratulations to Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Class of 2023! We wish you much happiness, success, and fulfillment in your chosen fields.
Last week’s smog conditions reminded me of the importance of geography when it comes to health emergencies. For example, knowing which communities in our area are at increased risk for respiratory emergencies could show health care providers where to focus personnel and resources.

PolicyMap is a tool you can use to find data and create map visualizations on specific health and socioeconomic conditions to see where help is needed most.

I am also excited to introduce a new resource, SAGE Research Methods (SRM), a multimedia collection covering a wide variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Whether you are starting out on your first research project, an experienced researcher, or a mentor or instructor, SRM will become a valuable addition to your research toolbox.
Questions about these or other resources? Remember that research librarians are available to assist you Mondays-Thursdays from 9:00am-6:00pm and Fridays from 9:00am-5:00pm in person, by phone, Zoom, chat, and text. Stop by or schedule an appointment for a research consultation. Circulation Desk staff are available to help you at all times when the library is open.
I am happy to report that our expanded Friday evening and Saturday afternoon hours were very popular with students. Summer hours started last weekend. Our expanded schedule, including Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, will resume in August. Many thanks to library staff members David Jones and Nicholas Lorenz who adjusted their schedules to provides services during our expanded hours.
Please note that the library will be closed on Monday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Visit our calendar for the latest updates to library hours.

Einstein librarians, Aurelia Minuti, M.L.S., Rachel Schwartz, M.L.S., Winifred King, M.L.S., Nancy Glassman, M.L.S., M.P.H., Racheline G. Habousha, M.S.L.S., and Caroline Delbourgo Patton, M.A., M.S.L.I.S, recently participated in the spring Problem-Based Learning session for first-year medical students. They designed a new activity for the course that focused on efficiently researching the clinical literature and then assessed students’ responses and offered suggestions for improving their searching skills. A variety of information, resources, and tools related to PBL are available in our research guide.
In May, Aurelia Minuti, M.L.S., Rachel Schwartz, M.L.S., Caroline Delbourgo Patton, M.A., M.S.L.I.S, and Latrina Keith, M.L.S., attended an international conference for information professionals in medicine and the health sciences. Sessions covered best practices for systematic reviews, updates to resources like PubMed and Endnote, and advancing diversity and inclusion in medical libraries.

Sage Research Methods
The library now subscribes to SAGE Research Methods (SRM), a platform designed to support the teaching and learning of research methodology at all levels, step by step.
| | |
SRM offers a wide array of tools and materials to support your research and teaching by providing content designed to support every step of the research process. SRM covers hundreds of qualitative and quantitative methods and includes interactive tools such as the Methods Map and Project Planner. Our subscription also includes a collection of datasets which will be useful for introducing students to data analysis.
With SRM you can:
· Learn how to navigate through every step of the research process, from formulating a research question to writing up the findings.
· Plan an entire research project on your own outside of class using the Project Planner.
· Curate public reading lists for students, that can be saved or downloaded
· Incorporate content into Canvas and create classroom assignments.

Introducing EndNote 21
Clarivate recently released EndNote 21, which retains the same layout and design as EndNote 20 but adds a number of new features. EndNote 21 is not yet available through the Einstein library but it will be offered in the future. More information will be forthcoming on when and how you will be able to download the updated version of the program. We will remain available to assist you with questions or issues related to EndNote 20.
New features of EndNote 21 include:
- Creation of customizable and color-coded tags that can be applied to references.
| |
|
-
Expanded sharing so up to 1000 users can have access to the same library.
- A recovery feature that allows users to retrieve synced libraries from the cloud in case of a catastrophic loss or failure that makes the library unable to open. In the near future, EndNote will also make it possible to roll back to an earlier copy of a library to address less serious issues.
-
Ability to restore an individual reference to a previous synced version.
| |
- A Cite-While-You-Write plugin will be available shortly for Google Docs and an improved plugin for Word is expected by fall 2023.
- An updated EndNote Web that will be more similar to the desktop version of EndNote. It has an all-new interface and further features will be added over time, including better de-duplication and a full-text finder. It will only be offered to EndNote 21 users, extending for three years after their activation date. For other users, the current Endnote Web will continue to work.
| |
- Enhanced duplicate detection is also on the docket for forthcoming EndNote improvements, although a date has not yet been announced.

PubMed Updates
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has recently made a number of updates to PubMed to add useful features and make searching the site more efficient.
| | |
- PubMed’s list of journals has been revised to include journal names both with and without initial articles like “the.” This helps ensure that the journal will be found in a search even when the article is omitted.
- Very lengthy author lists (more than 1200 characters or about 100 authors) are now truncated to streamline the display and make the search results easier to review.
- A new filter has been included in the “Other” category under “Additional Filters” that allows users to exclude preprints. (On the other hand, if you want to specifically target preprints in your search, you can select the “Preprint” category under the “Article type” filter.)
| |
- When emailing citations, there is now an optional “From” field where you can add your email address when sending search results. If you use MyNCBI, the field will be automatically populated. This update allows the recipient to see clearly who shared the articles.
| |
- Proximity searching allows you to find two or more words within a designated distance of one another. The search terms can be in any order but must be in the title or title/abstract field. Searches should be formatted as "search terms"[field:~max. number of words between search terms]. You can find more about how to do a proximity search in the NLM Technical Bulletin.
- Saving articles to a collection has been made more user friendly by renaming the “Favorites” button beside article abstracts to “Collections.” This offers the same functionality as using the “Send To” button and choosing “Collections.” Once the article is in a collection, the flag on the “Collections” button will be filled in. A MyNCBI account will still be required to use collections.
