From the Director

October is National Medical Library Month, a time to celebrate the vital role that medical librarians play in support of the mission of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. We are experts in finding, evaluating, and using health information. We work with students, postdocs, residents, faculty, and staff, to help them accelerate scientific discovery, provide high quality clinical care, and enhance medical education.

This year's theme for National Medical Library Month is "Yes, we do that!" This theme gives us an opportunity to showcase the many resources and services we provide. (You might be surprised!)

  • Need help with a systematic review? Yes, we do that!
  • Looking for guidance navigating the publishing landscape to maximize your research presence? Yes, we do that!
  • Demystifying citation metrics (H-index, Impact Factors, Altmetrics)? Yes, we do that!
  • Access to thousands of e-journals and e-books, as well as the databases and discovery tools to leverage this vast collection? Yes, we do that!
  • Want full text fast? Yes, we do that!
  • Need help choosing and using a citation manager (EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks, SciWheel, Zotero)? Yes, we do that!

To learn more about the resources and services we provide, join us for our second annual Library Fest celebration on Wednesday, October 18, from 3:00-6:00pm in the library on the first floor of the Forchheimer Building! Chat with our librarians as well as representatives from some of our publishers and content providers, including Access Medicine, Dynamed, PolicyMap, ScienceDirect, uCentral, and UpToDate (and ANKI). Staff from the Morris Park Branch of New York Public Library will also be here to sign you up for a library card for access to books, music, movies, magazines, and museums. If that’s not enough, there will be also food, awesome library swag, and a raffle! I hope to see you there.

At Library Fest you just might learn about a few resources and services you never knew you needed!

Resources Spotlight

Library Fest Vendor Spotlight

We hope that you will all join us at Library Fest 2023 on Wednesday, October 18th from 3 to 6 pm. To pique your interest, here are just a few of the vendors who will be joining us to showcase the clinical and research resources they offer, all of which can be accessed both on your computer and on mobile devices.

Unbound Medicine

UCentral from Unbound Medicine is a platform that provides access to a collection of manuals, handbooks, and clinical information tools. They include clinical calculators, the Merck Manual Professional Edition; the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics, which features a concise discussion of pathophysiology and evidence-based information on current therapies; the Johns Hopkins Guides for ABX, Diabetes, HIV, and Psychiatry; and many more useful tools.

UCentral is also available and searchable through the Unbound Medicine mobile app.

UpToDate and Anki

Many readers are probably familiar with UpToDate, which offers evidence-based, peer-reviewed clinical information on patient-care, diagnosis, and treatment questions. Topic reviews are written by recognized authorities who review the topic, synthesize the evidence, summarize key findings, and provide specific recommendations.

A new feature of UpToDate is that it can now be integrated with Anki to create flashcards to study for the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 exams. In addition, the Anki add-on makes it possible for students to easily take a deeper dive into a topics that come up while studying their flashcards to ensure that they are well prepared when the time comes to take their Boards. Check out this fact sheet to find out more and download the add-on.

DynaMed

DynaMed is an EBM tool designed by clinicians for clinicians and an alternative to UpToDate. It is updated daily and synthesizes evidence, practice guidelines, and clinical expertise to provide recommendations to support decision-making at the point of care. DynaMed utilizes an easy-to-read bulleted format to summarize information and also provides levels of evidence so users understand and can take into account the quality of the supporting data.

Policy Map

If you are interested in detailed information on demographics, economics, quality of life, education, health, and more, Policy Map is a great place to start. This online data and mapping tool draws from authoritative sources like the Census, BLS, CDC, and dozens of other federal agencies and private providers. It has thousands of indicators and data is available at a wide variety of levels from the national level to, in many cases, the neighborhood census block group. Plus, the visual representations of the data that are created in Policy Map are valuable tools for research, teaching, and simply understanding the statistics in a deeper way.

More Resources for Finding Preprints

Preprints have seen their profile rise, especially in the medical field, due to the rapidly evolving scientific landscape created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike published articles – which undergo rigorous peer review but are often subject to a long lag time between submission, acceptance, and publication – preprints are posted online without peer review. Thus, preprints allow researchers to get earlier access to new data without subscriptions or paywalls (although they should keep in mind that the information in these publications is subject to change) and provide authors with public feedback and collaboration opportunities. Many but not all preprints later appear in a journal.

In addition to the inclusion of some preprints in PubMed and Embase, which we highlighted in our August newsletter, you can find preprints in Web of Science (Clarivate). Einstein recently acquired a subscription to the Preprint Citation Index, which is a multidisciplinary collection of preprints drawn from multiple major preprint repositories, including arXiv, bioRxiv, chemRxiv, medRxiv and preprints.org

Preprints can be easily identified within a Web of Science record thanks to an icon and explanatory text and the preprint database is updated daily.

However, it is important to note that preprint citations on Web of Science are not included in Times Cited counts, Journal Impact Factor, or any other citation metrics within the Web of Science Core Collection or Journal Citation Reports.

You can also learn more about preprints and how to find them in different databases in our previous newsletters from February 2022, February 2023, and April 2023.

Earning CME Credits with Read by QxMD

You can earn up to 20 CME credits for FREE every year on Read by QxMD! Read Institutional Edition is a service that the Library has subscribed to help our users stay at the forefront of medical discovery. The service is based around Read by QxMD which is a free app that helps clinicians discover and access research that is most relevant to them.

By using graphical representations of data, these and other examples make the statistics more accessible and multi-dimensional and offer insights that might be lost when looking at the numbers alone. You can see more images from the NLM in a recent blog post or by searching its collections and choosing “Still image” from the dropdown beside the search bar, as shown below.

3. You will be taken to a page that provides information about CME accreditation within Read app and how to claim them. Once you are ready, scroll down to the bottom, and click Start.

4. If you have searched and read an eligible article, you will be able to select which papers you want to receive credits for. Select the papers and click Earn free credits at the bottom. Eligible content only includes peer-reviewed content and not summaries, preprints, or conference abstracts.

5. You will now be taken to a questionnaire that will ask about your learning experience and information about yourself. Once this is done, you can select the option to Earn Credits.

6. Finally click Claim and generate the certificate for your CME credits!
