Welcome Back Jasmine!

Jasmine joined the California Commission on Access to Justice in 2019 as the Senior Program Coordinator. Jasmine graduated from UC Berkeley in 2015 with a degree in History. Since then, Jasmine worked in the legal services field for 3 years at the Legal Aid Association of California as their Training & Communications Coordinator.

She is passionate about increasing access to justice through expanded legal services and education for marginalized communities. She is deeply involved in the Bay Area community and the prison abolition movement. Jasmine has interned with Berkeley's 94.1 KPFA radio station and volunteered with Prison Radio, the Prisoner Advocacy Network, and the Oakland Community Democracy Project. While attending university, Jasmine volunteered with Girls Inc. as a group facilitator at a girls' Juvenile Hall and with Teach In Prison as a tutor at San Quentin Prison. 

In her free time, Jasmine loves snuggling with her baby, Suraya, who was born in June 2019. You can reach Jasmine at JKaddoura@CalATJ.org.

Welcome Erika!

Erika joined LAAC in 2019 as the Training and Advocacy Assistant. She is a UC Berkeley student, majoring in Legal Studies and Jurisprudence. 

Erika's primary interest is in studying the impact the law has on minority groups. In her free time, she likes to relax in nature.

Access Commission Announcement:

We are thrilled to announce that as of October 2019, the California Commission on Access to Justice  (CalATJ) is now an independent nonprofit . LAAC is partnering with CalATJ, so we wanted to help get the fantastic news out.

For over 22 years under the State Bar, CalATJ has worked to increase resources and improve methods of helping low- and moderate-income Californians and others facing legal problems. CalATJ will continue to partner with the State Bar and other stakeholders on these efforts, but now with more independence to tackle tough issues.

Recruitment and Retention Project Update: 

LAAC has now concluded our focus groups! Thank you so much to all of the legal aid organizations and law schools that allowed us to meet with students. They were immensely successful, and shed light on the critical issues that law students consider in seeking a career.

Altogether, we spoke with 70 students! These focus groups are an important part of our Civil Legal Aid Recruitment and Retention study, which will be released later this year.
