The Maryland General Assembly this week passed the Building Out Broadband Act, a MACo Legislative Initiative aimed at solving Maryland’s digital divide by enhancing incentives and orchestrating opportunities for broadband deployment across the state. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there's been an increased need for internet access: students have transitioned to online learning, many professionals have shifted to telework, and others have needed to apply for unemployment or small business assistance programs. Addressing the digital divide is a top priority for county governments, and this critical legislation will promote economic growth, improve labor market access and outcomes, streamline access to healthcare, enhance civic participation, enrich education opportunities, improve quality of life, and the overall competitiveness of our communities.
