January 2022
A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

It has been a very tough January. With Omicron spreading so quickly, we are working hard to keep our community healthy. To that end, we have been hosting vaccine clinics, in partnership with the Department of Public Health. Since November, we have partnered with Public Health to distribute 1000 COVID vaccines, including almost 300 pediatric doses! We are waiting anxiously for vaccines to become available to children under five.

I also want to give you a heads up with some exciting news. In 2022, IVYP will change its name! We don’t know yet what our new name will be, but we are looking for a name that accurately reflects who we are and what we do. We are committed to serving the families in Isla Vista. But, our work has grown to include all of Goleta and much of the South Coast. We mitigate the effects of poverty, racism, and trauma by providing child care, family support, and community leadership. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts and have your help in identifying a new name for our organization.

Please complete this survey to share your thoughts and ideas.

New Curriculum At the Children's Centers
Did you know that we have a new curriculum here at IVYP? “PreK On My Way” is a new bilingual curriculum (Spanish and English) from Scholastic and replaces the previous curriculum “Big Day” to incorporate the new research-based practices in the field of Early Childhood Education. The curriculum focuses on kindergarten readiness skills such as language and literacy, math, and science. In addition to the “PreK On My Way” curriculum, we use “Second Step” which is a well-known curriculum among preschools and elementary schools, and it focuses on students’ social and emotional skills and development.

IVYP in the News
The Isla Vista Food Cooperative hosted a “Co-op History Coffee Hour” on Jan. 12, where attendees met with the original owners of the co-op and many community activists. Our very own LuAnn Miller, former executive director of IVYP, was at the signing and coffee hour, and talks more about the chapter she wrote in the new edition on the program’s development and the impact of IVYP in the community.

"I love forming relationships with people and witnessing the development of trustworthy relationships. At the FRC, we work alongside families to address their needs, and through human connection and community resources, we witness the final result: self-sufficiency. I find this process priceless."

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution and free farm stand. This month we are highlighting swiss chard! This leafy vegetable is a delicious, healthy, versatile green that can be added to many recipes! What’s more, its leaves and stalks provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, K, C and is also a good source of calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, sodium, phosphorus and vitamin E.

Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
