A Tale of Two Midnights: Times Square Lights vs. Diaper Need in America

As the clock ticked toward midnight on December 31, millions of people gathered in Times Square, their eyes fixed on the glittering ball that descended in a blaze of lights and confetti. The energy was electric—cheers, music, and champagne toasts filled the air as the world celebrated a fresh start. It was a scene of abundance, a cultural symbol of hope and prosperity.

But while the cameras panned across smiling faces and sparkling outfits, another reality existed—one that rarely makes the headlines. Millions of families across the United States greeted the new year not with champagne, but with worry. For them, the question wasn’t which party to attend or which resolution to make. It was whether they would have enough diapers for their babies the next day.

Times Square was dazzling—a billion-dollar production powered by sponsorships, advertising, and tourism. The ball itself, covered in thousands of Waterford crystals, stood as a beacon of celebration. Yet, all across America families struggled to afford one of the most basic necessities: diapers.

Diaper need is an invisible crisis. One in three U.S. families experience diaper insecurity, meaning they could not afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy. Unlike food or clothing, diapers are not covered by government assistance programs like SNAP or WIC. For parents living paycheck to paycheck, this gap is devastating.

Imagine the irony: millions of dollars spent on fireworks and festivities while millions of parents rationed diapers, sometimes leaving babies in soiled ones longer than they should, scraping out a diaper and putting it back on an infant. The health consequences are real—diaper rash, infections, and even hospital visits. The emotional toll on the mother is just as severe. Parents report feelings of shame, anxiety, and helplessness when they can’t provide something so fundamental.

Diapers aren’t a luxury; they are a necessity. A baby could use 6 to 10 diapers a day, which adds up to about $80 a month per child. For families already stretched thin by rent, utilities, and groceries, that cost feels insurmountable. Without diapers, parents can’t take their children to daycare, which means they can’t work. It’s a vicious cycle that traps families in poverty.

This isn’t just a personal problem—it’s a community problem. When parents can’t access diapers, it affects employment, education, and overall well-being. It’s a silent crisis hiding in plain sight.

As people watched the ball drop and made promises to hit the gym or drink more water, what if they had resolved to make a difference where it truly counted? Supporting Bottoms Up Diaper Bank can turn a symbolic fresh start into real change for families in need.

Bottoms Up Diaper Bank works to close the diaper gap by providing diapers to families who need them most. Every donation—whether it was a box of diapers or a monthly gift—translates into relief for parents and health for babies. It’s simple, tangible, and life changing.

The contrast between Times Square and America’s diaper need isn’t meant to dampen the joy of celebration. It’s a stark reminder that while people ring in the new year with glitter and glamour, they could also choose to shine a light on the shadows. The millions in Times Square represented hope for the future. Extending that hope to the millions of families who needed it most is the real challenge.

This year, the best resolution is clear: Help keep babies clean, dry, and healthy. Support Bottoms Up Diaper Bank. Because every child deserves a fresh start—not just on January 1, but every day.

POTTY TRAINING KITS MADE A BIG IMPACT

FOR FAMILIES IN 2025!

In 2025 Bottoms Up launched our Potty Training Kit iniative. Since January 2025 we have given out over 360 potty training kits to partner agencies in Franklin, Fairfield, Licking and Ross counties. We have also added new childcare partner agencies and are reaching those kiddos who may not have been able to attend daycare without diapers. Our volunteers are doing a wonderful job getting these diapers and kits out to all the families who are in need. We look forward to reaching even more families in 2026!

"Parents are really excited to receive their kits and we are very appreciative of the Bottoms Up Program"

What our partners are saying...

"We provided diapers to a grandmother who received custody of their newborn grandchild. The mother is one of our incarcerated women we provide services to at the Franklin County Jail. Providing diapers helped in a significant way to assist this family."
