AUG 2025

From the boardroom to the desert, and from classrooms to construction sites—our Habitat LA community is full of passionate people doing extraordinary things. In this issue, we’re proud to welcome three inspiring new Board members, celebrate the completion of our first ReBUILD LA wildfire home repair, and highlight incredible fundraising efforts from a record-breaking runner and a group of generous elementary students.

🌟Welcome Habitat LA’s New Board Members!

Excellent Leaders Join our Community

With the start of our new fiscal year, we’re honored to welcome three outstanding leaders to our Board:

  • Christine Chang is Director, Global Operations for Airbnb.org, with over 20 years of experience in her field. Christine volunteered with Habitat in her youth and the experience inspired a lifelong desire to be involved in mission-driven organizations. She leads Airbnb.org, focusing on scaling their ability to house people in disaster and conflict solutions – leveraging the global reach of the Airbnb platform and community for good.

  • Gregory Feng is Partner at EY, with over 30 years of experience in his field. Greg has volunteered with Habitat LA at several EY Connect build days and looks forward to dedicating his professional experiences to create a positive change in the lives of others through Habitat LA’s mission.

  • Shirley Mangalindan is the Chief Audit Executive for MUFG, with over 30 years of experience in her field. Shirley has volunteered with Habitat LA and has a deep appreciation for our commitment to empowering communities and providing the foundation for long-term stability and growth.

We're excited for their leadership and impact!

The First ReBUILD LA Home Repair is Complete!

New Flooring for Wildfire Survivors

We are thrilled to share that our Home Preservation team has completed the first ReBUILD LA wildfire repair for Yufen’s family home in the Pacific Palisades! Their home was devastated by a mudslide after the wildfire. The work included demolition and replacing the flooring throughout the home. More wildfire repairs to come! We can’t wait to take you along on the journey to rebuild.

Passionate Volunteer Takes on the “World’s Toughest Foot Race” for Habitat LA 🏃 🏡

Since 2022, committed Habitat LA volunteer and Crew Leader Dave Learned has logged over 150 volunteer hours helping build and repair homes across Los Angeles. This summer, Dave took his dedication to new heights—and temperatures.

To support Habitat LA’s Rebuild LA campaign, Dave entered the legendary Badwater 135, a grueling 135-mile ultramarathon through Death Valley, often called the world’s toughest foot race. With over 14,000 feet of elevation gain, scorching desert heat, and only 48 hours to finish, this race demands extraordinary endurance—something Dave clearly has in spades.

🏠 Whether he's leading a build crew or pushing through mile 100 in the desert, Dave shows that our volunteers are doing incredible things both on and off the build site.

Join Our Countdown to Long Beach Gives 🔔

Together, Let's Raise $15,000 for Families in Long Beach!

We’re counting down to Long Beach Gives, the day of giving that has raised over $10 million for local nonprofits since its start. Giving Day is September 18th, and early giving begins September 11th.

This year, Habitat LA has set a bold goal to raise $15,000 to help 44 families in Long Beach achieve the dream of homeownership. With 36 homes at Erin Grove and 8 on Orange Ave., we’re opening doors to brighter futures — but we can’t do it without you. Every dollar you give will be doubled thanks to our generous matching partner! Your gift unlocks twice the hope and twice the progress for Habitat LA families building toward safe, affordable homes.

Elementary Students Raise Funds for ReBUILD LA!

Thank You, Cascadia Montessori Elementary School

We’re shining a light on the next generation of philanthropists! Every year, students at Cascadia Montessori Elementary School in Vancouver, Washington, hold a bazaar to practice their entrepreneurial skills. Part of this agreement is to donate 10% of the proceeds to a designated non-profit. The student council members brainstorm the "who" and get feedback from their classmates and then cast their final vote. This year, the inspiring students decided to split their donations between the our ReBUILD LA fund and Pasadena Humane.

We hope you’re motivated by the efforts of our supporters - especially compassionate young student!  Learn how you can make a difference: Host Your Own Fundraiser.

Thank You to Our July 2025 Donors!
