Innovation Grants in Action

Bringing Science to Life

Sandy Run Middle School students brought science to life through Monitoring Young Hearts, a grant project developed by Joshua Adelman, Jessica Cowden, Kendra Finger, William Sebulsky, Daveda Smyrl-Henegan, and Tina Tofel.

Using real-time heart rate monitors, students collected and analyzed their own data while exploring how their bodies respond to exercise, making meaningful connections between science, health, and physical education.

Biotechnology in Action

UDHS students are using the same biotechnology tools found in research laboratories, thanks to an innovative idea from AP Biology teacher Megan Gallagher and support from UDEF.

Students are extracting DNA from their own cheek cells, using PCR to amplify genes, and analyzing DNA through gel electrophoresis and bioinformatics.

This hands-on experience brings real-world biotechnology into the classroom while building skills in genetics, data analysis, and problem-solving.

Finding the Rhythm

Maple Glen students have been learning Tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines, through an exciting collaboration between Music and Physical Education.

With custom equipment made possible by a UDEF grant, students are building coordination, timing, and teamwork while experiencing a vibrant cultural tradition.

Congratulations to Adam Brittain and Nicole Gerhart on creating this engaging opportunity for students to learn through movement, music, and culture!
