50 years of Mentoring in the Mid-South

This year we are celebrating 50 years of mentoring in the Mid-South. Since our inception in 1968, Big Brothers Big Sisters has matched over 66,000 youth facing adversities with caring volunteer mentors.

Susan George, Executive Director of BBBS of the Mid-South, believes the work we do is as important today as it was 50 years ago, perhaps more. “The impact of a mentor's gift of time means brighter futures for our children and healthier communities for the Mid-South," says George.

“It is our goal to serve more children each year,” says Alfred Washington, Big Brothers Big Sisters Board Chair. “This will be possible with the continued support of our partners and communities leaders. "We will celebrate our 50th Anniversary with two very exciting events, the 50 th  Anniversary Alumni Picnic and the inaugral BBBSMS Legacy Luncheon, these events will seek to engage new constituents and re-engage participants, donors, volunteers that have been involved over the last 50 years.

Meet a Match:
(A Lifetime of Friendship)

Richard Glassman and William Terrell

Richard Glassman was matched with his Little Brother William Terrell in 1997. Richard remembers William being an adorable kid who loved watching sports and driving go-carts.

He taught William how to ride a bike and drive a car, and spent hundreds of hours of quality time with him. Richard was an attorney with a busy schedule but always made time for William. William was a great student and decided to go to law school after college to follow in Richard's footsteps to become an Attorney. After graduation, Richard hired William to work at his law firm. The two spent many years practicing law side by side.

Today, William is an attorney with FedEx and lives in Dubai with his family. The two speak regularly and last year the families spent Thanksgiving together in Dubai. This decades long friendship shows that mentoring can transform lives and create bonds that last for a lifetime.
