Faisal Khan, Executive Director of the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center

We are excited to share that Faisal Khan has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center, effective April 23, 2024. Faisal was selected after a comprehensive nationwide search, and we are confident in his ability to lead our organization into the future.

From Quang Nguyen, IWC Board President:

“Faisal brings a combination of passion, perspective, and proven impact to the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center. His track record of advocacy and deep personal connection to our cause stands to not only enrich our mission but also create meaningful change. We're excited for Faisal to lead us with a fresh vision that mirrors the diverse hopes of our community.”

Faisal comes to us with over two decades of experience in human rights advocacy, notably as the founder and director of the Carolina Peace Center. Recently relocating from Washington, D.C., Faisal brings with him a wealth of experience as a first-generation immigrant with deep connections to Maine, where he received much of his education.

Before he gets too busy, we snagged a moment to ask our new E.D. some fun questions to give you a sneak peek at the man behind the mission:

1. Which books have influenced you most?

Answer: "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse, "1984" by George Orwell, and "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck have been significant for me. These books delve into profound themes like inequality, inequity, and societal structures, which mirror my global travels and explorations of various communities.

2. Can you share a favorite memory from your first visit to Maine?

Answer: One of my most cherished memories from my first visit to Maine was the first time I woke up to see snow. My roommate woke me early in the morning to see everything draped in a blanket of white. It looked like a scene from a fairy tale, very much preserved in my memory.

3. What are your go-to dishes when cooking for friends and family?

Answer: Pasta, usually spaghetti with meat sauce and meatballs. I also enjoy cooking Chicken Karahi and calamari with lemon and garlic.

4. Why are you excited to be back in Maine?

Answer: I'm thrilled to be back in Maine for several reasons. Firstly, the natural beauty and the quality of life here are unmatched. It's a place where I can really embrace a slower pace away from the hustle of city life like in D.C. Maine has given me so much—from a quality education to lasting friendships—and it feels right to give back to this community that has offered me so much over the years. Experiencing the genuine warmth and kindness of the people here, makes Maine incredibly special to me.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Faisal to his new role and back to Maine!

Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to connect with him in the near future.
