Toward our Goal of $3.2+ Million

With your generous contributions, every day we get closer to our goal of $3.2+ million. Thank you all for showing your love for this special place and ensuring our mission for generations to come.

The Lodge is Almost Ready for Fall!

After 13 days we have just gotten power restored on the heels of Hurricane Helene and we're ready to get back to work on our Capital Campaign projects. Of course, our hearts are broken for our neighbors and friends throughout this region who have lost so much from these deadly storms. We all remain concerned about the recovery efforts following both Hurricane Milton and Helene and we encourage everyone to do what you can to help aid these incredibly important efforts.

We are currently wrapping up the renovations of the North and East facing exterior of The Lodge and we are blown away by what Beto and his amazing team have accomplished in such a short time. From replacing all of the siding and decking to repairing and replacing windows, doors, and stairs, their efforts will ensure the structural integrity of this much-loved building for years to come.

The last few projects to complete on the North and East sides are staining all of the deck rails and replacing the kitchen window which will be finished by the end of the month. Join us for the Grateful Gathering Thanksgiving weekend and check out the results and the beautiful views!

CABIN RENOVATIONS

ARE READY TO ROLL!

Prior to kicking off our Capital Campaign, we had completed the full renovation of duplex cabins 11 and 12 along the Ring Road. This included new flooring, replacing siding and insulation, installing mini splits, and completely renovating the baths including the installation of much larger showers. (Now our guests can turn completely around in them which they seem to appreciate!) The end result is a much cozier cabin experience for our guests.

Now, as part of our Capital Campaign, we plan to continue renovating our guest accommodations in the same manner beginning with a couple more of our cabins. The cost of the renovations will run approximately $35,000 per unit and our team will start work shortly and continue through the winter months.

These renovations will go a long way in upgrading our guest experience and we look forward to having these cabins back online and ready to welcome visitors by early spring.

Power to the People!

Electrical Upgrades are Coming to The Mountain

With Hurricane Helene wreaking havoc on the area’s power grid, our local provider – Haywood Electric – has been pushed to the limit restoring power. This has slightly delayed our plans to upgrade the electrical capacity for the cabins along Ring Road.

That said, our electrician will be installing a new 400amp box on October 23. Haywood Electric will then come on property to upgrade our transformer and run a new line to the box so it can handle the increased power. The electrician will then run new lines from the box to each cabin along Ring Road. It all sounds very technical because it is.

Funded by a combination of our Capital Campaign and Southface Grant, the completion of this project will allow us to begin installing our new energy efficient water heaters for the cabins. This upgrade will permit us to ditch the current propane powered water heaters and help us to reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring hot water for all!

A Message From Mountain Member –

Dan Klem

Majestic Sunrises & A New Day at The Mountain

Hurricane Helene came, created a path of destruction, and then was gone. Two weeks later, two dozen of us UUs from Brevard gathered at our Beloved Mountain for our annual retreat. Many of us were touched deeply by the beauty of two majestic sunrises, new life and new hope in the mountains of western NC. Nature’s paradise had sustained considerable damage, but The Mountain Retreat was already up-and-running!

It was exciting to see all the major improvements since last year, all made possible by contributors like you to the current Roots and Wings Capital Campaign. I was delighted to hear of many of these projects from the new Director of Facilities, Ted Rosensweig. The refacing of the Lodge, which included replacing the old and deteriorating balcony rails and steps was a major one for me as well as for my partner, Carol Flake. It was from this new railing outside of our room that we were able to get a first glimpse of a new day dawning.

A longtime member of UU, Carol first visited The Mountain back in 1987 for a leadership conference. This is the fifth time that I have returned to The Mountain, each time more rewarding and soul-satisfying than the previous.  My first was in 1995 when Carol organized a reunion of graduates of Jean Houston’s Cultivation of Human Capacities Program, 1982-85.

Carol and I met again and fell in love during the pandemic and now the mountains of NC are my new home, living a fully committed life in love, joy and new meaning with Carol.

Our retreat theme this year was “Deep Listening” as applied to our interactions and relationships with others. Deep listening is also a means of communing with awe-inspiring Nature and the knowing that we are one. It was helpful to understand anew also, that each of us has a “small voice” within that serves as both an anchor and a guide. It tunes us in to our authentic and loving self. The old growth forest of oak trees and many beautiful vistas provide a perfect place for this deep listening.

I ask each of you to tune into “your own inner voice” regarding your contribution to the Roots and Wings Campaign to continue the renovations and improvements that we saw with our own eyes. The spirit and heart of The Mountain, its legacy and tradition, through your generosity, will be available to people of all ages for decades to come. Any contribution, great or small, will be well used and greatly appreciated!

Blessings all,

Dan Klem
