Big Step for Youth Health:
Ban of Flavored Tobacco Products
Dear Neighbor,

Tonight I am glad to announce that we took a major step in protecting our youth and improving the health of all Long Beach residents by banning the sales of flavored tobacco products here in Long Beach. These products are often marketed to, designed for, and accessible to our young Long Beach residents leading to greater addiction and significant health impacts.

We all know the addictive nature of tobacco products and the harms they cause, especially in our youth when products are made to appeal to young people and get them addicted early with sweet or candy-like flavors. This vote tonight was the culmination of a process I began back in 2019 with a temporary ban of flavored vapor products in response to the growing epidemic of youth tobacco addiction and serious health issues associated with their use.

This unanimous vote by the City Council tonight means fewer of our Long Beach young people will become lifelong nicotine addicts. It means fewer people in Long Beach will become addicted due to tobacco flavors like cotton candy, or bubble gum. It means fewer Long Beach residents will suffer the long-term health impacts associated with tobacco use and nicotine addiction.

I am proud that we are leading the way as a City making public health a priority for all residents and I thank those many residents, especially the youth who have spoken up in favor of the important role this ban will play in limiting the tragic effects of addiction.
