Big Stone Lodge’s September Calendar
A So-Fish-Ticated Luncheon, Lone Star Flight Museum, and More!

Big Stone Lodge’s free intergenerational programs are part of Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner R. Jack Cagle’s educational and recreational commitment to Harris County residents . Big Stone Lodge is in Dennis Johnston Park at 709 Riley Fuzzel Road, Spring, TX, 77373. Center hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to register for classes or programs, please call 281-350-1029 or visit www.hcp4.net/communitycenters/bsl .
In observance of Labor Day, the center will close on Friday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. and reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m.
Anyone requiring special assistance to participate in any program should contact Big Stone Lodge. An adult must accompany children under the age of 18. Child care is not provided at any Precinct 4 facility, and children are not allowed in classes in which they are not eligible to participate.


Special Events

Pontoon Boat Ride
Friday, Sept. 13, at 8:30 a.m .
 
Take a tranquil and scenic ride in nature along Spring Creek. Learn about the local area and its natural history and wildlife. Space is limited.

Trip Sign Up
Tuesday, Sept. 17, at noon

Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis. Transportation is provided for individuals 50 and older through Harris County Precinct 4’s Encore! A Harris County Precinct 4 bus will pick up and drop off participants at Spring Baptist Church, 633 E. Louetta Road in Spring for the following September and October trips:

·          Friday, Sept. 13, at 9:30 a.m. – Lone Star Flight Museum, Houston
The cost is $ 11 per person. Lunch is on your own at J Henry’s Draught House and Kitchen.
·          Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 9:30 a.m. – Lucky Land
The cost is $10. Lunch is included in the price.

Texas Indians
Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m .
 
Join Monte Parks with the Precinct 4 Trails As Parks program to learn about the many different Native American groups, from prehistoric to current times, that call Texas home.


A So-Fish-Ticated Luncheon
Friday, Sept. 20 at 11:30 a.m.

Precinct 4 Encore! invites adults 50 and older to the Old Hollywood glamor themed A So-Fish-Ticated Luncheon featuring music by Kevin Weishaar. Catfish On Wheels will provide all-you-can-eat fried catfish and shrimp, hush puppies, fries, coleslaw, baked beans, dessert, and unlimited iced tea and coffee. Dine In Only.
 
A $12 per person fee is payable in advance during registration. Tickets are available at Big Stone Lodge, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 18. 

Popcorn and a Movie

Ongoing Programs & Activities

Rhythm Walking
Monday through Thursday at 8 a.m.    

Start or end your day with a 2.5-mile walk to music in the comfort of the lodge.

Chair Exercise
Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:50 a.m.   

This gentle exercise is designed to assist those who suffer from discomfort associated with arthritis, joint aches, and stiffness. Participants build strength while remaining safely seated.

Tai Chi
Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.

A certified instructor teaches a combination of stretching and toning exercises.

Beginners Pilates
Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m .   

Learn how to build symmetry and coordination in the body. Loose-fitting exercise clothing and a thick yoga mat are required for maximum comfort.

Beginners Zumba
Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.   

A volunteer instructor leads this class that combines a variety of music with a fun and effective workout system.

Dancercise
Mondays and Wednesdays at 11 a.m .   

This dance class gives a safe and effective aerobic body workout. A variety of dance styles and music including country, pop, hip hop, salsa, tango, and merengue make this a fun way to exercise.

Beginners Drawing
Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

An accomplished artist and instructor will teach drawing techniques. No experience is necessary -- only a desire to have fun and learn.

Advanced Drawing
Mondays from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Learn drawing techniques from an accomplished artist or continue to improve your talent and skills.

Chair Yoga
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m.   

This slow and gentle exercise is designed to assist those who suffer from discomfort associated with arthritis, joint aches, and stiffness. Participants improve flexibility, circulation, and balance.


Hatha Yoga
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.   

A certified instructor teaches yoga methods to achieve physical and mental harmony, and emotional and spiritual peace. A non-skid yoga mat is required.

Line Dancing I
Tuesdays from 10:40 a.m. to noon

In this introductory class, participants will gain the skills necessary to dance to any line-dancing song.

Cards and Dominoes
Tuesdays at 1 p.m.   

Come alone or with a partner to play a variety of card games or dominoes.

Line Dancing II
Thursdays from 10:40 a.m. to noon   

This volunteer-led class features popular dances seen on television and in local dance clubs. Participants should wear rubber-soled shoes.

Chair Volleyball
Thursdays at 12:15 p.m.

This exciting and easy-to-learn activity is like traditional volleyball, but allows participants to remain seated.
