Big Ten investigators presented  Phase Ib results of the 
BTCRC-LUN15-017 study during a poster session at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer's World Conference on Lung Cancer, Sept. 23-26 in Toronto. Study authors included Ardaman Shergill, MD, University of Illinois Cancer Center; Muhammad Furqan, MD, University of Iowa; Jyoti Malhotra, MD, MPH, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey; Li Liu, PhD, University of Illinois Cancer Center; Nandita Bose, PhD, Biothera; Chandra Belani, MD, Penn State Cancer Institute; and Lawrence E. Feldman, MD (sponsor-investigator, pictured), University of Illinois Cancer Center.

The Big Ten CRC has appointed internationally recognized breast cancer physician and researcher Ruth O'Regan, MD, as its chief scientific officer (CSO). Dr. O'Regan is the division head of hematology, medical oncology, and palliative care in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; and associate director for clinical research at the UW Carbone Cancer Center.  The Big Ten CRC announced Dr. O'Regan's appointment during its  annual Summit  at Big Ten Conference headquarters in Chicago.

Teaming up against gastrointestinal cancers

UW Carbone's Dustin Deming, MD, always roots for the Badgers, and Clifford Cho, MD, of the UM Rogel Cancer Center cheers for the Wolverines. But when it comes to fighting cancer, they stand shoulder-to-shoulder as members of the Big Ten CRC's Gastrointestinal Clinical Trial Working Group.

Get to know Borys Hrinczenko, MD, PhD (pictured left)  and read Anas Al-Janadi, MD's perspective on the 40th anniversary of the FDA's approval of cisplatin as a cancer-fighting drug: "For me, the anniversary was a reminder of how important collaboration is in medical research. The Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium did not exist when [MSU biophysicist Barnett] Rosenberg made his discovery. Today, we routinely rely on our colleagues throughout the Big Ten to share their expertise and join us in finding new treatments for many forms of cancer."

The  Lurie Cancer Center  at  Northwestern University , led by director Leonidas Platanias, MD, PhD, is comprised of clinicians and researchers from  Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine , Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences,  Northwestern Engineering , and other academic units. Lurie Cancer Center's approximately 300 members are organized into eight formal research programs: Cancer Epigenetics and Nuclear Dynamics; Tumor Environment and Metastasis; Membranes, Organelles and Metabolism; Cancer and Physical Sciences; Cancer Prevention; Cancer Control and Survivorship; Translational Research in Solid Tumors; and Hematologic Malignancies.
