High School Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Ashby, Alyson, Carlos (L to R)
This year, PortSide started a great relationship with the Williamsburg High School of Architecture and Design (
WHSAD). Three WHSAD summer interns, students from Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Maspeth, were trained by doing major restoration work on the
MARY A. WHALEN's teak rail. We also
got them on TV, got them on board the cruise ship Queen Mary 2 and got them into a historic ship flotilla for Cunard's 175th anniversary.

Training professionals with District Council 9 (DC9)
DC9 trainees painting our galley
PortSide is proud to be partnering with
DC9's training programs. We provide the tanker MARY A. WHALEN as a training site, DC9 donates the labor; workers are trained, and the tanker gleams! DC9's Bridge Painting Division starts painting the exterior next week thanks to a very generous paint donation from
International Paint!
DC9's Metal Polishing Division will also strip and polish the MARY's bronze and Monel.
The power of place
All the above is possible
due to PortSide's move to a publicly-accessible, long term home at the end of May. Having that real estate stability is enabling PortSide to plan, expand, grow.
Get on board and support that growth! Help
PortSide NewYork get more people on board the MARY A. WHALEN and help us give #WaterStories to all.
Please buy a ticket to our fundraiser on Tuesday, October 27, and/or donate here.
