FOCA comments on Proposed "Open for Business" Act 
(Bill 66)
FOCA provided comments via the two Environmental Bill of Rights postings related to this proposed Bill. Our comments expressed concerns about transparency and public involvement on important land use decisions, and the possibility that protections for water and natural heritage could be circumvented under the new law.   Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced via Twitter on January 23 that they will not proceed with Schedule 10 of Bill 66. Read CBC news.

FOCA's comments on Cormorant Hunt Proposal
Recognizing that double-crested cormorants can be a local nuisance, but also the need for sound wildlife and ecosystem management policy and practice, FOCA contributed comments to the Province's Environmental Registry on the proposed new rules for hunting these birds. Ontario's Fishing Regulations 
New fishing regulations came into effect on January 1, 2019. The annual guide to the rules and regulations for recreational fishing in Ontario contains information about recreational fishing licences, open seasons and catch limits, as well as up-to-date fishing regulations for each fishing zone. Grant for Biodiversity Events
The Biodiversity Education and Awareness Network (BEAN) is once again intending to provide "micro-grants" of up to $500 to support biodiversity events and projects in Ontario around the International Day for Biodiversity on May 22nd. 2018 Insurance Costs for Extreme Weather

As reported recently by Water Canada, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has determined that the cost of severe-weather insured damages in 2018 reached $1.9 billion - the fourth highest on record in Canada.
