FridayMusings Friday, October 10, 2022 Helping define Livonia Quality of Life

The single most important vote in Livonia is for our school board.

It will define Livonia, enhance quality of life, attract young families.

FridayMusings maintains that the most important race on the ballot this November is that for our Livonia Board of Education. With seven candidates voters have a choice of two slates and one non-affiliated candidate. It is important that we have so many choices with clear distinctions between the two slates and the independently running candidate.

Musings has made clear that one slate of challengers along with the independent candidate offers the best hope for recovery of academic success after the two-year pandemic. The best candidates to select from are Colleen Burton, Liz Jarvis, Mark Johnson, and independent Emily Keith. Providing our school district with experience and a fresh outlook would be Colleen Burton, Liz Jarvis, and Emily Keith.

With so many of the community establishments lining up behind the incumbent slate it would be safe to assume that these three will win and an endorsement of all three would be the safe endorsement. But Musings is convinced that the fresh approach offered by Emily Keith, school safety, strengthening academic skills, improving self-worth, and continued fiscal stewardship, endorsed by State Representatives Laurie Pohutsky, Matt Koleszar, and Stephanie Young, will benefit Livonia in the long term.

For those supporting the incumbent slate, you will have selected three strong candidates, however, Musings would like to see Burton, Jarvis along with Keith elected in November. The alternative slate who are a part of the movement in western Wayne County to replace incumbents with those supporting expanded choice in education read that as more money from our established public schools being given to charter for-profit schools, is not for the future benefit of Livonia.

Your vote is important. Please share with your friends that the choice for Board of Education is best selected from the slate of Burton, Jarvis, and Johson along with Emily Keith. But with only three votes Musings is recommending Emily Keith, Liz Jarvis, and Colleen Burton.

The deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 17! Mayor Brosnan will pick three residences and a special spookiest home award with the best Halloween decorations. Mayor Brosnan and the Ghostbusters will visit the winners to deliver the awards on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the evening.

Meals on Wheels is looking for help

The Meals on Wheels program at the Civic Park Senior Center is in NEED of volunteers to help package, deliver and serve meals for seniors in Livonia. Meals are served/delivered Monday-Thursday with Friday coming soon!

10-15 volunteers are needed each day. Drivers and meal packagers are needed from 8-10 a.m. Servers for the congregant meal are needed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You don’t need to commit to every day to volunteer. Help out on your schedule!

Livonia site of 2nd Womens reproductive rights march

On Sunday, October 23rd, 12:00 pm-2:30 pm at Rotary park there will be the 2nd Womens reproductive rights march/protest!

PARKING- Parking is first come first serve so please carpool if you can as the park will have other people. Handicap parking is available near the event as well.

Not comfortable marching- Please join the group that stands on the sidelines of 6 mile in front of the rotary park. If you are unable to stand for long periods of time lawn chairs are ok to bring. They are looking for people on the sidelines while the other half marches.

They had a strong turn out last time! The organizers say "We have a voice and it will be heard!"

During this one-hour, virtual townhall, points about recycling will be covered while dispelling some of the rumors. After that, it’ll be your turn to let them know what you think.

Kate Mackie & Kellie Whitlock are serving up cider to raise funding for Livonia First Responder Foundation

Like a child's lemonade stand, Kate & Kellie will be hosting a cider stand! Come by for some cider & donuts and a bonfire! Their purpose is to raise money for our Military & First Responders who are battling PTSD. All donations from this event will be donated to Mission22 and the Livonia First Responder Foundation.

22 veterans and 1 first responder takes their lives daily due to struggles with PTSD and this breaks our hearts. Both of these organizations assist in this area.

This is so wrong on so many levels. Livonia needs to say no to this rhetoric.

Penny Crider seeking the office currently held by State Representative Laurie Pohutsky has taken an internet meme comparing the Democratic Party to the Nazis, and attached it to her campaign page on Facebook.

Crider writes, "Understand the Democrat platform and Democrat elected officials and their agenda. VOTE Republican VOTE against the democrats division and hatefield (sp?) rhetoric."

Crider who marched in Lansing opposing the Pandemic safeguards implemented in Michigan and has stood with other "Big Lie" supporters at their weekly demonstration at Seven Mile and Farmington, demeans herself with this posting.

Crider has solid conservative principles that she could and should run on. With experience working in Lansing for Senator Patrick Colbeck she could be a formidable candidate.

However, she cannot be considered a serious candidate for holding extreme MAGA positions. Issue campaigns are needed.

Crider cannot be taken seriously as long as she campaigns in this manner and which is another reason that Livonia benefits from Laurie Pohutsky as our State Representative.

The re-election of Koleszar, Pohutsky and Young will benefit Livonia

Livonia this November will transition from one State Representative to three. Each brings a commitment to taking Livonia values to Lansing while understanding our residents, both those supporting and opposing them, listening to all sides of an issue but showing consistency from their prior service in support of quality public education, appreciating and standing with our police, fire, and nurses, and making sure that our environment is protected not only for our generation but for generations to come.

FridayMusings is proud to endorse Laurie Pohutsky, seeking her third term in a district that includes northeast Livonia, part of Redford, and a portion of Detroit; Matt Koleszar, seeking his second term in a district that includes the western portion of Livonia, part of the Plymouths and part of the Northvilles; Stephanie Young, seeking her second term that includes southeast Livonia, part of Redford and a portion of Detroit.

These three will be bringing seniority to the table which will be a benefit to Livonia. Three members of the State House fighting for a return of our tax dollars, supporting small businesses that will help ensure job creation, and standing tall with the need for increased support for our public schools without the siphoning of tax dollars to the for-profit charter schools.

We know Laurie Pohutsky, an outspoken fighter for a clean environment, we will get to know Matt Koleszar who has a history of listening and coalition building in his first two terms and spending a few minutes with Stephanie Young will showcase her strength in caring for those less fortunate.

No other community will have the leadership in Lansing that will be provided Livonia with the re-election of Pohutsky, Koleszar, and Young.

State Representative Matt Koleszar seeking his third term has added a major portion of Livonia, primarily bordering the parts of Plymouth and Northville that create his new district.

FridayMusings has endorsed Koleszar for re-election over his Republican opponent Cathryn Neracher, who as a supporter of Tudor Dixon for Governor has aligned herself with the most extreme positions of the MAGA movement.

As a small business owner, she could and should have articulated serious issues that would have separated her campaign from the more extreme elements of her party.

We join the Police Officers of Michigan and Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan in supporting Koleszar. Today we want to share more of the reasons Koleszar, who works in the community with residents regardless of party affiliation, deserves your vote.

He will add to our clout in Lansing joining Representative Laurie Pohutsky and Representative Stephanie Young giving Livonia a strong voice in identifying our hometown needs and working together for a strong Livonia voice in Lansing.

In his own words Koleszar says that "As a public school teacher of 12 years, I witnessed firsthand what impact the decisions made in Lansing have on students and teachers. Even after voting for the largest school funding increase in modern history, our funding levels are still far behind where they should be. So I will continue to fight on this crucial issue.

"More Teachers in Schools. I’ve introduced HB 4664 to create a pathway for parapros (people who teach but don’t have a license) to become teachers and alleviate the teacher shortage in Michigan.

"Protecting Families of Police and Firefighters. PA 127 was my first bill signed into law, and it ensures any child of a fallen police officer or firefighter can go to college in Michigan tuition-free. These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe, and this is the least we can do to support them."

Koleszar has been endorsed by Clean Water Action - Michigan saying that "Focusing on clean air and drinking water has always been a top priority for me and will continue to be. We’ve worked hard to hold Arbor Hills Landfill accountable and improve the quality of life for thousands of Northville residents, but we know that when it comes to protecting Michigan’s environment, there is still so much work to do across the state."
