The Livonia Symphony Orchestra kicks off the 2019-2010 season
Livonia Civic Chorus helps celebrate the life of Bob Hardies
The typewriter caught up with the Stewarts, Robert and Susan, thanks to facebook. They attended the Livonia Symphony Orchestra at Clarenceville High School this past Sunday. Let me borrow from their facebook posting a review, pictures and words.

"Tonight Susan and I enjoyed Concert 1 of the Livonia Symphony Orchestra 2019 - 2020 Season. Musical Director and Conductor Volodymyr Shesiuk showcased works by Wagner, Mendelssohn, Tchaikowsky and Beethoven. And featured violin soloist Svetlana Tsivinskaya who applied her considerable talent to Ludwig van Beethoven's beautiful Romanze No. 2. We look forward to every one of the upcoming events in the LSO's 47th Concert Season. Another great night out in our community!"

Here is the concert schedule for 2018 - 2019 to help you schedule the one or ones you are planning to attend. Tickets can be purchased online at  http://www.livoniasymphony.org/tickets.html

"MAGICAL FANTASIES" -Dec 07, 2019 4:00 p.m.
"PASSPORT TO SCANDINAVIA" -February 22, 2020 4:00 p.m.
"ROMANCE IN THE AIR" -May 09, 2020 4:00 p.m.
FREE: PATRIOTIC AND POPS CONCERT - June 11, 2020 - 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile across town at the Harris Funeral Home nearly 200 friends of Bob Hardies gathered for a Celebration of Life. On hand was one of Livonia's premier art organizations The Livonia Civic Chorus who shared 3 songs at the Celebration.

Under the direction of music director Jeff Swan and accompanist Kimberly Swan the 30 members of the Chorus sang   Flying Free,  You Raise Me Up with Be Still My Soul, and  On Eagle's Wings.

The Chorus joined Dan MacIver, Rotary President Janet Haas, R. William Joyner along with Bishop Don Hancheon in sharing remembrances. A letter from the Livonia Symphony was read as well.

Carol Brodbeck dropped a note after the Celebration, "What a wonderful Bob's Celebration of Life was yesterday.  Those who spoke did a great job in covering the various facets of Bob's multi-faceted life?   The Livonia Civic Chorus did an awesome job?   He is well pleased.  I think we all now have even a greater appreciation for all that he did for others.  I believe he not only adopted Livonia as his home, but we, as his immediate family, also.

"Thanks to all who took the time to pause on an Autumn Saturday afternoon--some who traveled long distances."

So on one day two celebrations both of which had the support and encouragement of Bob Hardies, the kick off to the Livonia Symphony Orchestra 2019-20 and remembrances as Dan MacIver said "of the life and sincerity of Hardies."
Merry Christmas. Bah humbug ! ! ! The typewriter says Happy Thanksgiving then Merry Christmas.
This is so wrong. The typewriter has to get through the Fall color tour, final lawn cutting, mum plants, Halloween, City election, Thanksgiving first. Then and only then can I get into the Christmas season. Give it a break Home Depot.

After posting this comment along with the picture reaction was swift:

Cathy Lute Klockner I am sooo with you on this! I LOVE the fall holidays. But they are trampled on earlier and earlier by reindeer feet!

Robert Joyner And what's wrong with reindeer. If people didn't want it, Home Depot wouldn't do it. Or Walmart. Or 12 month Christmas stores.

Liz Jarvis It's time to plant bulbs, not light them.

Linda Eagle-Trudell Christmas before Thanksgiving is wrong! I make presents all year long because it takes more than a few hours to create handmade items, but I just put up the Fall decor last week!

Deb Schommer My favorite season is summer, and I find fall "threatening" because I know winter is not far away. But seeing holiday decorations out three months ahead has always irritated me. Why can't we let the seasons remain special, without rushing so far ahead? In our home, the winter holidays start with Thanksgiving. We need to celebrate more, but commercialize less!

Ginger Choike-O'Connell  I so agree with you...first Halloween then Thanksgiving then Christmas quite rushing from August to Christmas

David Mckillop As a person that worked in retail for over 40 years (Sears)I look at the business side of it,the merchandise starts arriving to the stores sometime around Labor Day,not just Xmas stuff but winter goods as well snow blowers, snow shovels, ice melt, etc, merchandise has to be moved to sales floor to make room for all the back up stock that is to follow, you're absolutely correct,Native American Day (formally Columbus Day) October 12TH is way to early for you and me to want to think about shopping for Xmas trim or gifts, but the stores have to.One more thing in case you need to know there are only 74 shopping days till Christmas!!

Jamie Hopp Gindele Yep, it's just wrong.

Jeff Adams Thank you for reporting this and taking a solid position, we will have plenty of time to deal with fake trees, lawn decorations, and lights after Thanksgiving.

Nancy Maier You are so, so correct.!

R Karl Burnett Gotta' agree with Bill,.. we haven't even raked leaves, yet!!
Some mailings should just be ignored.
It was shortly after the typewriter returned to hometown Livonia after 26 years in Plymouth Township, six of which I served as a Wayne County Commissioner. Dealt with lots of local community issues in the 10 communities I was elected to represent, from Northville to Plymouth Township. At no time during that stretch did a single local official bring up the issue of Right to Life. None that I know ever received the endorsement of Right to Life of Michigan. The issues were all about roads and parks.

Back to shortly after returning to Livonia. In one of the first local elections I received a notice that one of the local candidates for Judge had received an endorsement from Right to Life. Called him up and he told me that Roe v Wade was the law of the land and he would honor it and that "we will never get an issue that would bring right to life into Livonia issues."

Then I received another post card endorsing a candidate for city council. That candidate won as did the Judge.

At that time I had a pot hole in the street in front of my house. I picked up the phone and called Right to Life of Michigan who had endorsed one of our city council candidates. "I have a pot hole and wonder if you could call and ask City Councilman (fill in the blank) and ask him to get that pot hold filled." After telling me that they have nothing to do with Livonia issues and they would not make that call. The person then hook up.

This past weekend thousands of Livonia residents received a postcard mailed from Grand Rapids and using the Right to Life of Michigan mailing list endorsing four candidates. It was paid for by the 4 candidates as a group, one for Mayor and 3 for Council.

This organization from Grand Rapids should stay out of our city council elections. I value the personal beliefs of those who support right to life just as I value the personal beliefs of those who are pro-choice.

These candidates endorsed should  stick to the real issues affecting Livonia. And there are many. Right to Life of Michigan will not get another road paved, another park enhanced or a Master Plan moved forward. We have no clinics providing abortions. Okay, yes, we do have dozens of drug stores in Livonia that sell the morning after pill but I see no one picketing or encouraging them to move out of town.

Even in our currently polarized nation, it is my hope that the facts will win the day. That the truth will always matter. The truth is that right to life is not on the list of priorities in Livonia. But apparently these 4 candidates think it is.

The Arc of Northwest Wayne County is expanding Lekotek,
the only toy lending library in Michigan for children with
intellectual and developmental disabilities
The Arc of Northwest Wayne County (The Arc NW) is expanding Lekotek through the generosity of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) Charitable Foundation Fund of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, JAKKS Cares, and The Grainger Foundation.

Lekotek is a therapeutic play program and toy lending program that helps children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) like autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome, ages birth to twelve years. It is the only toy lending library in Michigan dedicated to the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children with I/DD and complements the many therapies kids with I/DD receive.

When Jennifer and her daughter, Courtney, pictured center in blue t-shirt and black shorts with pink-trim finishing the race with a big smile, started the Lekotek Program, Courtney was a toddler struggling to stand because of her multiple disabilities. Jennifer used the toys from Lekotek to motivate Courtney daily to develop her hips. Jennifer shared how that support continued to make an impact on Courtney's life even as she got older. In middle school, Courtney decided to participate in a school race. Her mom shared, "Courtney started the 100-meter dash from a wheelchair. When the gun went off, she got up and finished the race. The Arc was an incredible, instrumental factor in giving Courtney a life. A real life."

To jumpstart the Lekotek program expansion, the DADA Fund of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan granted $37,500, The Grainger Foundation donated $5,000, and JAKKS Cares has committed to donating 100 new toys.

With these new funds and donations, The Arc NW plans to ramp up the number of annual play sessions from 452 to 1,000 by 2027 and carry out more sessions in local communities where families already are - schools, libraries, therapist and doctor's offices, and hospitals. In addition, The Arc NW is opening up Lekotek membership for the first time to teachers, therapists, physicians, and other professionals who directly work with children with I/DD to help strengthen their work and better serve the families living in our communities.

"A growing number of children are being diagnosed with disabilities and mental health challenges, but resources, like toys and play, can help create healthy, meaningful futures. We are endlessly grateful for these generous gifts that will make the expansion of Lekotek possible," shared Gretchen Sanewsky, the Executive Director of The Arc of Northwest Wayne County.

Through JAKKS Cares initiatives, the company utilizes the powerful resources and inspired employees of JAKKS to assist under-served children and families around the world. Since inception, JAKKS Cares has donated more than $50 million in toys, school supplies, and monetary endowments to millions of underprivileged children around the world in an effort to help children smile, play, and succeed. In addition to in-kind giving and employee volunteer programs, JAKKS Pacific maintains environmentally friendly and socially responsible global sourcing and manufacturing practices worldwide.
