Seedlings' online auction: a win-win for bidders, blind kids
Two days. Two days left. Two days left until bidding starts. Friday, November 1st at 8:00 A.

Win great items for yourself or holiday gifts and help blind children learn to read by bidding in an online auction Nov. 1-14 benefitting Seedlings Braille Books for Children, a non-profit in Livonia.

You could bid on and win a Sandbox Virtual Reality (L) where bidders can win a private two-hour virtual reality experience with family and friends at The Sandbox Virtual Reality Arcade in Westland, MI. Shoot zombies, be a Jedi knight, fight monsters and dodge bullets.

Hot auction items include tickets to Detroit Red Wings, Lions and Tigers games; a two-night stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island; golf packages; restaurant gift cards; handmade quilts; tickets to the Henry Ford, vintage items - even photographs by internationally renowned blind photographers Bruce Hall and Pete Eckert!

And yes, once again lunch with the typewriter pictured on the right and an article in FridayMusings. Robin Henke bought a lunch with the typewriter two years ago and Art Cole last year. The typewriter has been collecting pop bottles all year to guarantee a great lunch.

Check out the more than 350 items or make a cash donation at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks. Bidding begins at 8 a.m. Nov. 1 and goes until 10 p.m. Nov. 14.

"Everyone should find something they want to bid on," said Karen Smith, Seedlings' Community Outreach Manager. "We have an amazing variety of items, and we'll continue to add more leading up to and even after the auction opens."

Seedlings hopes to raise $21,000 for 2,100 braille books for children around the world who have vision loss.

"Blind children are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning to read," said Seedlings Founder/Director Debra Bonde. "For every 100 books a sighted child has, a blind child might have only five because braille books are scarce and often expensive."

Seedlings gives half of its books away free, and the other half are distributed for an average price of only $10 a book.

To help Seedlings provide books for free you can bid on and win Forest Ballet: This autographed photo, titled Forest Ballet, is one of two by internationally renowned blind photographer Pete Eckert available in Seedlings' online auction at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks Eckert's work has attracted commissions from major brands, including Volkswagen and Swarovski.

Braille literacy is key to a life of independence and opportunity, according to the National Federation of the Blind. Seventy percent of blind adults in the United States are unemployed or underemployed. But of the 30 percent who are working fulltime, 9 out of 10 are fluent in braille.

"Literacy is just as important for blind children as it is for sighted children," Bonde said. "Yet blind children have less opportunity to hone their reading skills because braille books often cost more than $100 each. Seedlings' free and low-cost books help to give blind children the chance to become fluent braille readers, which they need for success in school and life."

Other great auction items include tickets to the 2020 Detroit Grand Prix, VIP air show tickets to the 2020 National Cherry Festival, autographed sports memorabilia, VIP tickets to the 2020 Concours d'Elegance of America, vehicle detailing, gift certificates for knockerball and virtual reality experiences, brewery tours, swim lessons, Germack and Cherry Republic gift baskets, electronics, jewelry, gift baskets and more.

Seedlings' supporters nationwide will also find wonderful deals at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks including tickets to the Toledo Zoo, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and Creation Museum in Kentucky. Gift cards are also available for chain restaurants and national retailers. For more information, contact Karen Smith at 734-427-8552, ext. 301, or seedlink7@ameritech.net

Another item you can bid on is a Blue Angels Formation where you can bid on tickets in Seedlings' online auction (www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks) to sit in a special VIP section to watch the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration squadron, perform at the 2020 National Cherry Festival in Traverse City.

About Seedlings Braille Books for Children
Seedlings Braille Books for Children was founded in 1984 by Debra Bonde of Livonia, who wanted to make braille books more affordable for children with vision loss. Braille books are rare and expensive, often costing more than $100 for one book! The average blind child may have just five books for every 100 books a sighted child has.

With money raised at fund-raisers, and through grants and donations, Seedlings is able to distribute high-quality children's literature to children with vision loss all around the world. Seedlings gives half of its books away for free and distributes the rest for an average of just $10 a book.

For more information, visit www.seedlings.org, or contact Karen Smith at 734-427-8552, ext. 301, or Seedlink7@ameritech.net.

Also available to win is a Knockerball party where you can host a Knockerball party at one of Knockerball Michigan's indoor fields or in your backyard, at your school or at your church with a $249 Knockerball Michigan Gift Certificate.

                   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you ever wonder what impact your donations to Seedlings make on the lives of young people around the world? Noah (pictured here), age 17, is one of "Seedlings' kids." Here is a statement in his own words about what he has gained from Seedlings books:

"I am a 17-year-old boy who is blind. As you can see by my bookshelf in the background of my picture, I love books from Seedlings. I enjoy grabbing a book off the shelf and sitting down to read it. The braille books allow me to have the freedom to read at my own pace and whenever I  want to. Thank you so much for providing braille books!"

This Photo of Noah, standing in front of his book shelf, full of books, holding one volume of "The Hunger Games" produced by the team at Seedlings.

We enjoy hearing from our readers. . .emails, phone calls, Facebook.
Thoughts that need to be shared.
Terry Godfroid Marecki
Terry Marecki, Wayne County Commissioner: It is very unfortunate that a certain County Commissioner has taken these purchase agreements and released them to the public before any commission attorney, fiscal analyst, clerk or a single commissioner has seen them. The Livonia elected and appointed groups haven't seen them as well. We have not been presented with any documents at this time but I anticipate we will get these soon. It's curious why this Commissioner  thinks that releasing these prior to her colleagues seeing them, will help convince other Commissioners of her viewpoint.

Kathleen Bilger   After meeting all the candidates except Mr. Duggan, I found my four and Brandon McCullough tops the list. His work with Habitat for Humanity, his job with Novi, involvement in sports, a young family and history in Livonia make him a well rounded, articulate candidate who understands the city.

I also voted for Eileen Mc Donnell, Rob Robert Gjonaj Donovic and Jim Davis. Why? Because they asked for my vision for Livonia.

Nancy Osborne I have talked with all the candidates for City Council. I'm most impressed with Brandon McCullough and Eileen McDonnell. They have my vote.

Alan C. Helmkamp  Brandon McCullough is a r eal good guy and very nice family. Believe he has what it takes.

Nathan Lee   (Maureen Brosnan's) plan is to ensure that our public safety mileage tax dollars actually go towards solving our public safety issue. We have been fighting for years to get our administration to be proactive and fix this. But they chose to bury their heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine, instead of doing what the taxpayers voted for. That is why we could not endorse Laura Toy.

Daniel Centers   Livonia police and fire are always professional, always show up, and have been taken advantage of. Every elected official has priorities. Maureen's focus, is to me, the biggest challenge our city is facing- keeping our dedicated first responders. Twice my family had to call 911 for my grandmother and Livonia police and fire literally saved her life and gave us more invaluable time with her. That's how important they are to our city, and why Maureen
Brosnan will be a strong leader. She gets our community, and will make it stronger.

Skip Nairne   Laura Toy values our first responders. She has our vote.

Mark Windecker   From Cynthia and myself: (The Rotary Spaghetti Dinner) had good conversations, good food, good organization, and good a cause.

Linda Eagle-Trudell   Love seeing my former boss, Dale Collar (at the Rotary Spaghetti Dinner).

Maureen Miller Brosnan   The spaghetti was fantastic, but the company was the real reason I came. Thank you Rotary!

Charlie Mahoney   Wish I was in town for (the Rotary Spaghetti Dinner) - but on my way to a board meeting in DC - sent a donation to support the good work of The Rotary.

Jim Davis  Thank you Bill (FridayMusings) and Thank you Rotary Club (AM and Noon) for getting the word out on Post Polio and supporting this cause.

Madonna University Repertory Theatre Presents
Neil Simon's The Star-Spangled Girl November 1, 2, 3,
and
A 1940's Kaleidoscope Radio Hour November 16 and 17
The premiere mainstage season for the Madonna University Repertory Theatre kicks off Friday, Nov. 1, with Neil Simon's comedy The Star-Spangled Girl.

The show involves the perfect All-American girl. When she moves in next door to two college buddies writing a protest magazine, sparks are sure to fly.  Add romantic attraction to the mix - that somehow becomes a lover's quadrangle - and the resulting fireworks rival any Fourth of July celebration.

Performances, in Kresge Hall, are Nov. 1 & 2 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission, and $10 Student /Seniors. Purchase tickets online here  ( https://t.e2ma.net/click/ute3ac/qaxt3l/iggi5k ) or at the door.

Madonna University's Repertory Theatre performers are giving more than a stellar performance. They also are giving back to the community through their support of The Bride's Project (TBP), a non-profit bridal salon in Ann Arbor. Theatre patrons are encouraged to donate their five-year-old or younger wedding gowns to TBP when they attend The Star-Spangled Girl. Money raised by the sale of the gowns supports families touched by cancer. The TBP mission is to offer sustainable funding to the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor, and to offer brides a socially-conscious, eco- and budget-friendly option to purchase a wedding dress.

Liberal arts education, career preparation and service-learning have been the hallmarks of a Madonna University education for more than 80 years. In addition to the beautiful main campus, conveniently located at I-96 and Levan Road in Livonia, Madonna offers academic programs in Gaylord, Macomb, and online in China, Haiti and the United Arab Emirates. Michigan's most affordable, independent, Catholic, liberal arts university, Madonna also offers more than 100 undergraduate and 35 graduate programs in the colleges of arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, education, and nursing and health, as well as the School of Business.
                                             ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Madonna University also invites you to a 1940's Kaleidoscope Radio Hour.  A self-written script and compiled show featuring performers from our Performing Arts Ensembles: Lyric Theatre, Chorale, Jazz, Repertory Theatre, and a tap dancer. Songs, commercials, 5-min mysteries with Foley sounds, Who's on First, Stop the Music game segment; all representations of a 1948 radio show.
