Seedlings' online auction: a win-win for bidders, blind kids
|

Win great items for yourself or holiday gifts and help blind children learn to read by bidding in an online auction Nov. 1-14 benefitting Seedlings Braille Books for Children, a non-profit in Livonia.
You could bid on and win a Sandbox Virtual Reality (L) where bidders can win a private two-hour virtual reality experience with family and friends at The Sandbox Virtual Reality Arcade in Westland, MI. Shoot zombies, be a Jedi knight, fight monsters and dodge bullets.
Hot auction items include tickets to Detroit Red Wings, Lions and Tigers games; a two-night stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island; golf packages; restaurant gift cards; handmade quilts; tickets to the Henry Ford, vintage items - even photographs by internationally renowned blind photographers Bruce Hall and Pete Eckert! 
And yes, once again lunch with the typewriter pictured on the right and an article in FridayMusings. Robin Henke bought a lunch with the typewriter two years ago and Art Cole last year. The typewriter has been collecting pop bottles all year to guarantee a great lunch.

"Everyone should find something they want to bid on," said Karen Smith, Seedlings' Community Outreach Manager. "We have an amazing variety of items, and we'll continue to add more leading up to and even after the auction opens."
Seedlings hopes to raise $21,000 for 2,100 braille books for children around the world who have vision loss.
 "Blind children are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning to read," said Seedlings Founder/Director Debra Bonde. "For every 100 books a sighted child has, a blind child might have only five because braille books are scarce and often expensive."
Seedlings gives half of its books away free, and the other half are distributed for an average price of only $10 a book.
To help Seedlings provide books for free you can bid on and win Forest Ballet: This autographed photo, titled Forest Ballet, is one of two by internationally renowned blind photographer Pete Eckert available in Seedlings' online auction at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks Eckert's work has attracted commissions from major brands, including Volkswagen and Swarovski.
Braille literacy is key to a life of independence and opportunity, according to the National Federation of the Blind. Seventy percent of blind adults in the United States are unemployed or underemployed. But of the 30 percent who are working fulltime, 9 out of 10 are fluent in braille.
"Literacy is just as important for blind children as it is for sighted children," Bonde said. "Yet blind children have less opportunity to hone their reading skills because braille books often cost more than $100 each. Seedlings' free and low-cost books help to give blind children the chance to become fluent braille readers, which they need for success in school and life."

Seedlings Braille Books for Children was founded in 1984 by Debra Bonde of Livonia, who wanted to make braille books more affordable for children with vision loss. Braille books are rare and expensive, often costing more than $100 for one book! The average blind child may have just five books for every 100 books a sighted child has.
With money raised at fund-raisers, and through grants and donations, Seedlings is able to distribute high-quality children's literature to children with vision loss all around the world. Seedlings gives half of its books away for free and distributes the rest for an average of just $10 a book.

Terry Marecki, Wayne County Commissioner: It is very unfortunate that a certain County Commissioner has taken these purchase agreements and released them to the public before any commission attorney, fiscal analyst, clerk or a single commissioner has seen them. The Livonia elected and appointed groups haven't seen them as well. We have not been presented with any documents at this time but I anticipate we will get these soon. It's curious why this Commissioner thinks that releasing these prior to her colleagues seeing them, will help convince other Commissioners of her viewpoint.

 The premiere mainstage season for the Madonna University Repertory Theatre kicks off Friday, Nov. 1, with Neil Simon's comedy The Star-Spangled Girl.
The show involves the perfect All-American girl. When she moves in next door to two college buddies writing a protest magazine, sparks are sure to fly. Add romantic attraction to the mix - that somehow becomes a lover's quadrangle - and the resulting fireworks rival any Fourth of July celebration.
Madonna University's Repertory Theatre performers are giving more than a stellar performance. They also are giving back to the community through their support of The Bride's Project (TBP), a non-profit bridal salon in Ann Arbor. Theatre patrons are encouraged to donate their five-year-old or younger wedding gowns to TBP when they attend The Star-Spangled Girl. Money raised by the sale of the gowns supports families touched by cancer. The TBP mission is to offer sustainable funding to the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor, and to offer brides a socially-conscious, eco- and budget-friendly option to purchase a wedding dress.

Please join the typewriter at the Douglas Trumbull Film Forum at Phoenix Theatres Monroe on Star Trek The Motion Picture's 40th Anniversary this December 7th. Turnbull is an American film director, special effects supervisor, and inventor. He contributed to, or was responsible for, the special photographic effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Blade Runner and The Tree of Life, and directed the movies Silent Running and Brainstorm.
The typewriter was hooked with the mention of Blade Runner. Add to it 2001: Space Odyssey and I am there. Maybe early with popcorn and iced tea. I am all about it.
