Seedlings’ online auction: a win-win for bidders, and our blind friends

Win great prizes and help blind children learn to read by bidding in an online auction Nov. 10-17 benefitting Seedlings Braille Books for Children, a non-profit in Livonia.

Lunch & Aerial Truck Ride: You can win lunch for up to four people prepared and served by Livonia Fire Chief Dave Heavener at Livonia Fire Department Station 3, followed by a ride in the bucket of the Aerial Fire Truck.

Hot auction items include tickets to Kings Island, Cedar Point and African Safari Wildlife Park; Amazon and Visa gift cards; Costco shop cards; a two-night stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island; golf packages; restaurant gift cards; tickets to the Henry Ford – even photographs by internationally renowned blind photographer Pete Eckert.
Check out the more than 200 items or make a cash donation at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks. Bidding begins at 8 a.m. Nov. 10 and goes until 10 p.m. Nov. 17.

Safari: Bidders can win a six-person V.I.P. pass to African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton, OH.

“Everyone should find something they want to bid on,” said Karen Smith, Seedlings’ Community Outreach Manager. “We have an amazing variety of items, and we’ll continue to add more leading up to and even after the auction opens.”

Seedlings hopes to raise $20,000 for 2,000 braille books for children around the world who have vision loss. Prizes will be mailed to auction winners for contactless-delivery.

“Blind children are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning to read,” said Seedlings Founder/Director Debra Bonde. “For every 100 books a sighted child has, a blind child might have only five because braille books are scarce and often expensive.”
Seedlings gives half of its books away free, and the other half are distributed for an average of only $10 a book.

Braille literacy is key to a life of independence and opportunity, according to the National Federation of the Blind. Of the 30 percent of blind adults in the United States who work fulltime, 9 out of 10 are fluent in braille.

Jazz Duet: This autographed photo, titled Jazz Duet, is one of two by internationally renowned blind photographer Pete Eckert. Eckert’s work has attracted commissions from major brands, including Volkswagen and Swarovski.

“Literacy is just as important for blind children as it is for sighted children,” Bonde said. “Yet braille books often cost more than $100 each. Seedlings’ free and low-cost books help to give blind children the chance to become fluent braille readers, which they need for success in school and in life.”

Other great auction items include tickets to the 2021 Detroit Grand Prix race and 2021 Thunder Over Michigan air show; car washes, oil changes and detailing services; overnight stay at the U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboat Crews Quarters at Historic Whitefish Point; museum and zoo passes; swim classes; piano lessons and more.

Seedlings’ supporters nationwide will also find wonderful prizes at www.BiddingForGood.com/braillebooks including gift cards to chain restaurants and national retailers. For more information, contact Karen Smith at 734-427-8552, ext. 301, or [email protected]
Check out the Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church Community Cupboard!

The Community Cupboard is a ministry of RGPC, Hubbard and West Chicago, under the care of their Board of Deacons!

Rosedale Pastor Kellie Whitlock says that the church has "found the blessings in this pandemic through outreach to our city.

"Over the summer we felt called to offer food as a way of living out the words of Jesus. We simply want our city to know it’s here!"
And Livonia you can help!

Here is the list of food items the Deacons need for the Community Cupboard and the Thanksgiving Food Delivery:

Cereal, pancake or waffle mix, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, pasta and spaghetti sauce, apple sauce, soup, dried potato mix, dried rice mix, canned tuna and chicken, mixed vegetables, canned fruit, baked beans, and brownie or cake mix.

Please place food items in the bin outside the back parking lot entrance, Door 6, Monday-Friday between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. When possible please try to contribute items in plastic containers instead of glass so they can be used in the Community Cupboard.

To assist the Deacons in their food inventory, please do not place any items in the cupboard.

Jeff Daniels on why America needs Michigan
The typewriter predicts Tuesday's elections
Let's see how the typewriter looks at the results for next Tuesday. My view only and I am sure you have your own as well. So here we go:

Michigan Supreme Court: Bridget Mary McCormack, Elizabeth Welch, Mary Kelly, Brock Swartzle. With Biden prepared to take the state look for the two candidates nominated by the Democrats for this non-partisan position to defeat the two republican nominated candidates. It generally holds true that the party that carries the state wins the Supreme Court.

United States House of Representatives: Haley Stevens, Eric Esshaki. Stevens hard work, visibility, transparency and accessibility will take this by a comfortable margin. At best Esshaki can say he has signs on every street corner. Have not met anyone who has met Esshaki and have not met anyone who has not met Stevens. He got a late start and it shows. Stevens started early and it shows.

State Representative: Laurie Pohutsky, Martha Ptashnik. What will it be? $600,000. $700,000. Money is pouring into the district from the pro-for-profit charter school lobby in Grand Rapids supporting a public school teacher who is running on a platform to take money from our historic public schools. She wants guns in our classrooms. Ptashnik is trying to unseat Laurie Pohutsky, a proven accessible, available legislator and the outside funding is making that possible.

When Livonia was under construction in the 60's and 70's our city and school officials worked together understanding that strong public schools enhanced property values while attracting young families. Today we have city leaders putting party above policy, personality over programs. It is the establishment Republicans who have controlled Livonia politics for years wanting a return to power.

Pohutsky won by a slim margin in 2018. Look for similar 2020 result.

County Commissioner: Nancy Darga, Terry Marecki. The typewriter endorsed Marecki and in any other year without the Presidential race at the top of the ticket she should win with her base in Livonia. But Darga is playing it right. A strong base in Northville City having served as Mayor pro-tem. Look for Northville Township to line up solidly with Marecki.

Marecki has a long record of community involvement, she knows people, has been involved with hometown issues. This should be her race. But Presidential years make it difficult for the bottom of the ticket and with the increase of straight party voting it makes it more difficult for a candidate not of the prevailing party.

The Democrats will carry Livonia and with it add votes for a number of lower ticket candidates like Darga and Pohutsky. Look for the Darga-Marecki race to be as close as the Pohutsky-Ptashnik race.

Livonia Board of Education: Karen Bradford, Crystal Frank, Dan Centers, Tammy Bonifield. This is one that the typewriter is struggling with calling. Two candidates have re-election set, Bradford and Frank. Add Centers with his strong media campaign and wealth of endorsements and he makes the top three.

Acosta has the support of school parents in the Stevenson attendance area and should be a strong candidate for one of the top four positions. If the Livonia Democratic Club has the pull they have exhibited in the past then Acosta makes it to the top four.

But Bonifield has shown her support for the community beyond the school board and to this typewriter that is important. There is too much thinking that the only people who should have a vote on the board are those with children in the district. Another day, another article, let's talk about it as the majority of people in Livonia have no children in school, but many have grandchildren, neighbors, etc. and we have as much at stake as those with children.

The four incumbents deserve re-election and from the feedback we are getting the four incumbents will win but look for a nail biter for #4.
