Police Ranks Continue to Grow. Congratulations and Welcome to Town.
|
Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan made it a priority, adding new members of the Livonia Police Department. This week saw Acting Chief Thomas Goralski welcome three new Police Officers to Livonia.
Congratulations to our newest Police Officers! On November 3, 2021, three recruits graduated from the Wayne County Regional Police Academy. During the 17-week academy, the recruits were great representatives of our police department by being leaders in their class and receiving honors in multiple categories. Congratulations and be safe!

Happy 70th Birthday Brother Bob
Okay, I accept the fact that brother Bob of San Antonio fame is better looking than his short chubby brother Bill of Livonia fame.
And I know that he is a medical doctor and an attorney while I can offer up FridayMusings three days a week.
Today brother Bob turns 70 and as I am 72 that means I have more wisdom. Right? Probably not.
But the one thing I am sure of is that as Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote "there is no time like the old time, when you and I were young."
You know where we lived on Indiana Street and one day put on our skates and ice skated to Whitman Jr. High School, or rode our bikes each Fall day to football practice at Sheldon Center.
The first week in 1960 we went to Grant Elementary School and coming out you turned left instead of right, which by the way was the only time in your life you ever took a left position and the next thing we knew you were at Naimola's Barber Shop on Plymouth, a mile away, calling home, 3 hours later, because you had already memorized our home phone and called telling us where you were at. In 3rd grade.
Homerun derby in the back yard, burning trash every night after dinner, doing math problems set up by dad every night also after dinner, the chore chart in the kitchen broom closet, taking turns doing dishes or finding ways to hide the bologna so mom would think we ate it.
The old time did it for me. You take care and have a happy 70th birthday. It's time I came for a visit. Past time as I am tired of redefining our childhood from my perspective--because I never get it wrong.

Hey everyone! It seems like Daylight Savings Time caused some issues with the time listed for the last coffee hour. This month's virtual coffee hour will be at the regular time, 6:30 PM on 11/22 here on Facebook Live. The time is listed correctly on my end, but I know it was incorrect with yesterday's so I just wanted to make sure it was clear. Sorry for any confusion!

Blake Morgan, VOCES8 and holiday relaxation
|
VOCES8 performiing 'Ne Irascaris Domine' & 'Civitas Sancti Tui' by William Byrd in the Gresham Centre in London.
The typewriter when not listening to Bobby Dylan or the Byrds or any number of 60's and 70's iconoclastic rock bands I find myself drifting to VOCES8 on You Tube. Got hooked on this soothing, contemplative music when researching a Livonia High School graduate Blake Morgan, Tenor, Arranger, Composer, who sings with VOCES8 based in London but traveling the world.
And quite a success he has become with his Grammy considerations.
But I leave you with these three hours of beautiful choral music, for studying, concentration, relaxation and just plain chillin'. Peaceful and soothing infinite sounds. Enjoy.

Synopsis of City Council Meetings: November 8th
|
FridayMusings enjoys reading a synopsis of Council Meetings, especially posted by Carrie Budzinski on her Vote.Run.Serve Facebook Page. Here is the synopsis of the November 8th Regular & Study Mtgs:
Transparency, accountability and community engagement are essential in a democracy. Local government is important and City Council meetings provide insight into what's happening in your community. Here is a summary of the November 8th Regular and Study Meetings.
Livonia City Clerk Susan Nash provided an overview of Election Day. 7,617 residents voted in person on November 2nd and 14,592 voted absentee. 22,209 out of 80,929 eligible voters participated in the election. [Note: 13,528 out of 73,384 eligible voters participated in 2017, the most recent Council-only election]
Representative Laurie Pohutsky attended the meeting to provide a legislative update. A short-term rental bill passed the State House (she voted against it), Livonia is getting $100,000 for a new 'Senior' Park, and $1M will be coming from the state for a flood mitigation study around Bell Creek.
Public Comments are not summarized because they can be of personal nature and the goal of VRS is to provide consistent/clear summaries.
The consent agenda was approved.
A resident's request to purchase a city park adjacent to their home was denied.
Exterior remodel plans for Citizens Bank at 6 Mile and Newburgh was approved (although there is an on-going dispute between the property owner and tenant - Citizens Bank - about the remodel)
A Quit Claim Deed was approved for Lyndon Park Site Condominiums
The Study Meeting session previews what you can expect to hear more about in future Regular Meetings.
A new union contract has been agreed upon for the Livonia Fire Department. The current contract is not yet up and an unusually easy renegotiation that increases both PTO and Sick Time and allows for the continuation of 4 day weeks for full-time staff. The Paramedic Cadet program was highlighted during the meeting. Individuals accepted in this program can receive 1 year to complete the fire academy and the City will pay for the tuition. Learn more: https://home.schoolcraft.edu/inservice/fire-training
The City has a $2.79 million surplus that will be equally distributed between the retiree trust fund and the building improvement fund. [Find a general financial statement about the surplus here: https://bit.ly/3mUq29I]
- A fence will be added to Union Briggs Cemetery
- Contract for major storm snow removal service was approved.
- Contracts with OHM, Hubbell, Roth & Clark, Inc, Spalding DeDecker and Anderson Eckstein & Westrick, Inc were extended for 5 years. They each provide engineering services.
Roads Update: An asphalt zipper reclaimer will be purchased to allow for 'in-house' road repair work on city roads. The county is expected to repair Merriman between Schoolcraft and Plymouth and widen Farmington Road. Following an October 27th public meeting on Road Repair, a list of priority projects have been identified for 2021. This will cost the City approximately $9.5M. In response to previous concerns about tree removal and the tree ordinance in the works, projects that have tree removal issues will be skipped, allowing for no harm in the community and a continuation of road projects.
Expect a Road Repair Millage renewal to be introduced next year.
If you are interested in the Tree Ordinance, the Tree Committee meets tomorrow, Tuesday, November 9th at 10am at the DPW Headquarters (12973 Farmington Road).
Items not approved for the consent agenda that will be discussed at the next general meeting: Kid Venture Child Care Center on Farmington south of Plymouth and signage proposal for Livonia Athletic District.

Comments from Carrie Budzinski re the meeting on her Facebook page:
Kudos to Laurie Pohutsky for sharing a fantastic legislative update at the council meeting, she's doing great work for Livonia in Lansing. Jim Jolly was the first to speak out against transferring parkland to a resident for development. Brandon McCullough shined a spotlight on the Paramedic Cadet program and gave an update on the tree ordinance that's in the works.
Administration victories are getting the Fire Department union contract approved ahead of schedule and using revenue surplus for the retiree trust fund (helping make sure it's fully funded for those in the system) and the building improvement fund (to make sure we don't have other examples of Noble in the future).
