With only one day left in the Seedlings Bidding for Good
y ou and up to five of your friends and family members can be among the first to have a private lunch meeting with Livonia Mayor-Elect Maureen Miller Brosnan . That bid for a local restaurant with treat on Brosnan is now at $125.

Or you and a friend can enjoy a spirited conversation over lunch with the typewriter,  Bill Joyner, publisher of Friday Musings.  Then read all about it in an issue of Friday Musings complete with pictures! That bid also at a local restaurant with his treat is now at $155.    Or you can talk over state issues at a private local lunch meeting on her dime with state
Senator Dayna Polehanki. That bid is also at $155.
DIA proposes a renewal of the ten year 0.2 millage this spring. Vote Yes.
The city of Livonia can and should take a leadership role as rightfully
we are the cornerstone of cultural excellence in southeast Michigan
Voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties took a decisive step in 2012 by approving a 0.2 mill, 10 year millage. One year later the City of Detroit filed bankruptcy resulting in the DIA raising and contributing to the City of Detroit $100 million to keep the city from liquidating precious and historic works of art.

This was not in the grand plan for the
Detroit Institute of Arts, located in Midtown Detroit, with one of the largest and most significant art collections in the United States. With over 100 galleries, it covers 658,000 square feet with a major renovation and expansion project completed in 2007 that added 58,000 square feet.

The DIA is now proposing to place on the ballot in the spring of 2020 a proposal to renew the 0.2, 10 year millage.

The DIA has proven its worth to the residents of southeast Michigan. It has been an educational and cultural presence that enhances quality of life throughout the region. Over 60,000 students have been to the DIA on field trips experiencing new cultures and civilizations from days long since passed. Their eyes opening wide with amazement and joy realizing what opportunities exist beyond video games and social media or streaming of movies.

It is a world they would not have if it were not for the DIA.

This ballot proposal is another opportunity to show and develop a regional partnership. An opportunity for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties to solidify a relationship that brings us together rather than creating barriers to regional relationships.

Livonia leaders have an opportunity to take a leadership role in urging a YES vote on the DIA 0.2, 10 year millage. As a community with over 20 art organizations we rightfully should take our place as a leader in passing this proposal. I call on every elected official in Livonia to say yes and to actively work to see that it is passed.

Lunch with our hometown Veterans thanks to Community Choice Credit Union

It was a cold Tuesday when I left home to take in the Community Choice Credit Union luncheon for veterans at Livonia's American Legion Post 32. Holli Guenther Kerkhof, member center manager at the Credit Union invited the typewriter to a luncheon honoring local veterans. Met up with a group of community-minded Choice employees, nearly 70 veterans and enjoyed what I hope will become an annual luncheon.

It warmed up considerably as I met some of the veterans, catering folks who had prepared an awesome meal, and the Choice volunteers who were so gracious and welcoming to all the veterans on hand, greeting and thanking them for their service.

Dad Joyner served mostly stateside during WWII but had one tour in the Pacific Theatre. Had gone down to the recruiting office to enlist right after Pearl Harbor, December 1941.. He had been turned down that summer for asthma. But Pearl Harbor changed all that. His brother enlisted in the Marines. Brother Dr. Bob joined ROTC while at Michigan State and did 10 years of service after that in the Air Force.

I make no bones about the fact that the typewriter while opposing the war in Vietnam did whatever it took to try and end the war. I did not want another brother or sister to die
in a war half the world away, a war that in my opinion had no basis for being a part of our international policy. With a low draft number traveled down to the draft center in Detroit for my physical. A physical deferment kept me from serving.

I value all who served and all who are serving. The opportunity to meet some fine veterans was something that was hard to turn down.

Holli Guenther Kerkhof.
To this typewriter it is wonderful that Community Choice took time to organize this luncheon. This is just one of dozens of community service activities that their team members volunteer for during the year. It was amazing to learn that over 3,000 hours of service to community are performed by this credit union.

Some of the 70 veterans on hand were Vietnam veterans. I I had the privilege of sitting with Mayor Joseph Girolamo a World War II Veteran who shared stories about his service. Three brothers, one Marine, one Navy and himself in the Army. Another was a Vietnam era veteran who served his tour in Germany.

The Color Guard from American Legion Post 32 was kept busy this week with at least three assignments on Monday. Today, this luncheon and then off to one or two more before the day ended. Crisp and resolute these men did their Post and all veterans proud.

Dennis Davidson, army, assistant to Wayne County Treasurer Eric R. Sabree, offered up the invocation after which a full luncheon was served. The gust speaker was Irvin Thompson, a Vietnam Veteran.

The stories of veterans, the travels around the world, the horrors of war are amazing. My dad rarely talked about his service. It was only after he passed that I found a treasure trove of pictures of him aboard the ship returning home, in group shots of those he served with, some carrying his rifle and some with large groups of fellow soldiers. I heard stories from mother about my grandmother watching guard in the mountains around her hometown in California, binoculars in hand making sure that we were not attacked. Mom serving on army bases, where she met her husband while he was stationed there.

Mom talked. Dad just nodded his head. I think he had turned his hearing aide off. But boy did he show us the exercises he did and was still able to do. This was the early 1960's and after dinner we would sit on the front porch and take turns doing push ups, running around the block, knee bends on one leg. I looked forward to those nights after dinner.

As I set with the veterans I couldn't help but to picture dad and the luncheons on Veterans Day I would take him to the last years of his life, he passed at 94.  Ever so hesitant to share stories about the war he would slowly open up and share a nugget here and that. It was only after he passed that I found diaries he kept during the war and pictures.

Thank you Holli, Community Choice Credit Union, and the veterans who gave me some time to think about dad, smiles and tears. He would have enjoyed this luncheon, not for the food, but he would have enjoyed the southern fried chicken, but for the opportunity to turn up his hearing aide and share stories of places visited, memories long ago etched in his mind waiting for the right time to bring them out.

Job well done Holli. Look forward to Year Two.

Rob Donovic thanks the folks he met along the campaign trail
When my family immigrated to America in the 1980's from Albania, they came in search of a better life. Because of the dedication of the men and women who have served, they found it. Because of the service and sacrifice of our Veterans, we all have opportunities in this country.

So I felt it fitting that I thank everyone, on this day, for helping me get elected to Livonia City Council. I'm extremely humbled and thankful to have been chosen by Livonia residents. To have so many  people who volunteered, donated, voted, and worked so hard and made this all possible.

I am eager to work with my colleagues on council, Council President McIntyre, Mayor Brosnan, and the residents to make Livonia one of the most sought after cities in the state.
