One day left for two giving opportunities. Seedlings and Corsi's
|
SeedlingsOnline Auction 4 more days
Livonia is the hometown of Seedlings, known around the world for providing books and reading material to sight impaired children.
With the bowling outing being postponed this year this on-line auction becomes their biggest fundraiser. And we all have a chance to help provide another 2,000 books free to children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to share the love of reading that you and I have.
And yes you can bid on lunch with Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan and another fun prize, you can bid on lunch with the typewriter and have an article about you in FridayMusings.
Look, those are just two of the fun items up for bidding. There are over 200 bidding opportunities. But you only have today and tomorrow. So log on now and enjoy daydreaming about the trip to the zoo, staying overnight at a lighthouse, golfing, dinners, care for your car. And yes lunch with the typewriter.
Help raise $20,000 for 2,000 braille books for blind children!
For every 100 books a sighted child has, a child who is blind has just five! That's because braille books are rare and expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars each.

By taking this pledge of Healthy Livonia today we can change the world for tomorrow
Livonia has long been cultivating resources in support of creating a thriving and developing positive community quality of life that powers the acceptance and relevance of a hometown that for generations has been a cornerstone of southeast Michigan.
The footprint of Livonia excellence continues to sustain quality and identification as a community that others continue to look to for leadership.
In the 50's Livonia councilmembers met with the Felician sisters to discuss the need for a hospital to serve what was hoped to be a thriving community with young families in need of health care. Their hope and expectation was not to fulfill a simple daily need in the immediate but rather a long term foundation for the health and safety of what they fully expected to be a vibrant hometown for thousands of young families.
Livonia has always had the reputation of thinking big and going big. All with the expectation that quality of life required change and residents expected change within the fiber of a stable community.
The 60's saw the purchase of property that would eventually become over 60 parks. The 80's saw the opening of the Civic Center Library. The 90's brought us a new recreation center. Each decade enhancing quality of life in a hometown that would have a population approaching 100,000.
Realizing that the threat of Covid-19 was continuing to be real and would have dramatic affects on our national health, sat down--if a telephone interview can be considered a sit down--with two hometown proponents of a healthy lifestyle. Dan Wolocko, Director of Sports Therapy & Sports Performance at Mercy Elite Sports Performance, and Dr. Prasad L. Mikkilineni, an internal medicine Doctor specializing in geriatrics.
As St. Mary Hospital grew it began to take on added services and its footprint expanded to care for increased needs throughout the community. Expanded to the point with Doctors opening medical practices to care for the elderly, trainers provide care for the athletes, cooperation with the Kirksey Recreation Center providing services for those needing rehabilitation, and healthy Livonia taking the concept of health and fitness into the world of Livonia parks and neighborhoods.

Mercy Elite Sports Performance is a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System and Trinity Health. The Mercy Elite vision is to be recognized as the trusted source for all sports, health and wellness in western Wayne County, specializing in individualized and comprehensive care for the "athlete in you."
Mercy Elite is moving into their new and expanded center at Schoolcraft College while maintaining their presence at the Kirksey Recreation Center. The move was scheduled for last week.
Wolocko, a graduate of Central Michigan University, is part of a team at Mercy Elite that includes 40 trained professionals who each "love giving people the opportunity to improve their sport skills." They work with ages from "six years to middle school and High School."
Wolocko is a strong advocate of "serving others while also serving one self."
They specialize in the assessment of movement and prescribe corrective exercises for rehabilitation, injury prevention and performance enhancement according to the individual need for physical and sports activities.
"Traditional sports medicine models only include surgery, rehabilitation and event coverage. MercyElite provides those services and injury prevention education, immediate access, direct injury care, nutritional support, mental/emotional support and sports performance training."
It goes without saying that, to borrow from Lion King the one line that fits here, Mercy Elite works with all of us in the "circle of life."
He epitomizes the belief that by taking the pledge of health today you will make a difference tomorrow for both yourself and others.

That took me to interviewing Dr. Prasad L. Mikkilineni, a former hospital medical specialist who served as Chief of Staff at St. Mary Hospital, currently serving on the Board of Directors, and now works in private practice in Livonia. "I love St. Mary Hospital, but there comes a time when we want to take a step back and enjoy more of life and spend time with loved ones."
Listening to him explain that gave me pause about my own life. Taking a step back is not easy but one we all should, at some point, consider.
Because he specializes in older patients he understands that they are at risk and all of us have a responsibility to make sure they are safe. "We have to make a part of our routine the wearing of masks, the safe distancing, and the staying inside as much as possible."
"Our hospital is more experienced now. Hospitals now understand which way to go in providing treatment. Because of the separation of Covid and non-covid patients we do not need to postpone procedures."
He is a firm believer that if you are sick you need to see your primary care physician and "if the person has Covid-19 we send them immediately to St. Mary's. "It is important for patients to understand that wellness visits are vital, especially as we get older. Do not cancel taking care of yourself."
Mikkilineni understands that we need to each lead our lives and try not to let the fatigue of the situation stop us from working at being healthy. For sure, we each need to take a pledge of health today to make a difference tomorrow for ourselves and others.

Phoenix Theatres Presents: Vic Mignogna Film Forum
Phoenix Theatres at Laurel Park Place is proud to announce that actor and filmmaker Vic Mignogna will be in Livonia in person to host a two-day film forum on December 5 & 6 that will feature his popular anime films “Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Sailyan, and for the first time on the big screen the award-winning web series “Star Trek Continues.” Mignogna will host a series of question and answer sessions throughout the day on the making of independent film, his experiences with voice-over work for hundreds of Anime films and his work on developing, acting, writing and directing his 11 episodes for the highly popular “Star Trek Continues” series.
“I had the opportunity to see ‘Star Trek Continues’ for the first time just a few short months ago and thought it was an amazing experience, said Cory Jacobson, owner of Phoenix Theatres. “I couldn’t believe the quality of the production and Vic’s ability to faithfully capture the flavor of the original ‘Star Trek.’ Vic’s series literally finishes the now famous 5-year mission that was cut short when the original series was canceled in 1969 and bridges the gap from the television series to the motion picture adventures in thoughtful and exciting way.”
We are so in need of quality film selections and just to simply have fun activities again for everyone, that I contacted Vic personally and invited him to come to Michigan, and he enthusiastically agreed “I hadn’t been to Michigan for several years and there are so many great fans in the Midwest. Having the opportunity to see them and have some fun for a weekend in Detroit was something that I didn't want to miss,” said Vic Mignogna. “also, the chance to see the original ‘Star Trek the Motion Picture’ return to the big screen along with free showings of ‘Star Trek Continues’ should be a very unique and exciting experience for everyone.”
