Doors open at the theatre dubbed by FridayMusings as Livonia's Art in the Park at six o'clock in the evening with the viewing of one of their very favorite classic films to be premiered at seven o'clock. Guests will enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres, beer & wine and live jazz music.

Congresswoman Haley Stevens brings her House Committee on Science, Space & Technology to Livonia
Congresswoman Haley Stevens brought members of Congress to Livonia recently after which she dropped a dime on the meeting and Musings thought to share it with you:

Michigan's 11th District is home to world class innovation in the mobility sector, and I recently had an opportunity to show off the best of Southeast Michigan to my colleagues on the House Committee on Science, Space & Technology.

As Chairwoman of the Research and Technology Subcommittee, I convened a bipartisan field hearing in Livonia to explore how smart transportation technology can  improve safe and efficient transportation options for our small towns and suburban communities.

The Research and Technology Subcommittee heard testimony from a panel of experts with diverse areas of knowledge on best practices for integrating emerging mobility technology into our communities.

Smart technologies have already begun to shape how Americans move around and live. They are being used to reduce traffic congestion and cut emissions. Southeast Michigan has been on the forefront of innovation in this space with our industry leaders and best-in-class workforce, so it's only fitting that we lead the discussion on how this technology can be made more effective through collaboration between public, private, and academic stakeholders.

The Motor City is home to a thriving innovation economy, and I am determined to keep it that way.

In Washington, I have introduced legislation to improve small business innovation and technology grant programs; encourage girls to get involved in STEM; and develop pilot programs for manufacturing innovation.

Having spent a career working at the intersection of industry and government, I know the importance of strategic investments in research and development that supports the great innovation taking place in Southeast Michigan. The nation has much to gain by our example, and I can't wait for the next opportunity to bring the Science Committee to the 11th District to see all that we have to offer. 
Students awarded $200 in contest sponsored by Livonia Human Relations Commission


The City of Livonia Human Relations Commission recently held an essay contest. Students wrote essays based on the subject "If you had unlimited resources and total control of your schedule for the next six months, how would you spend your time and resources to improve the quality of life in Livonia? Who would you have on your team to collaborate with and why?" (Famous or not)

Congratulations to Erick Nielsen - Churchill High School, Taylor Browne - Stevenson High School; Madison Moore - Franklin High School and Kendell Kremhelmer - Clarenceville High School. 

Each winner was awarded a $200 Visa gift card at the Human Relations Commission meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The Bowling Challenge is set and it promises to be a dozy -- the Beauties v the Beasts

The gauntlet is down. Alan Helmkamp has issued the challenge and it has been accepted by the typewriter. He is willing to line up his team of the "beauties", against my team of "beasts".

His team, the Beauties, has been represented by Sweet Dreamzzz, a nonprofit organization committed to improving children's health, well-being, and academic performance by providing sleep education and bedtime essentials to economically disadvantaged students and their families.

My team, the Beasts, has yet to be identified, in fact I am looking for four bowlers who would like to fill out the team and help win this challenge while at the same time raising money for Seedlings. 

I want it understood that the title of his challenge is 100% the idea of Alan Helmkamp. It will be played out at the annual Seedlings Bowling for Braille Books March 14 at the Novi Bowl.

Four years running the challenge has been Musings v Observer with Musings taking 3 of the 4.  But I must confess they took one when then Publisher Sue Rosiek brought in a team of ringers who each bowled three games of 200 or more. We took a break last year. Now is the time to renew the challenge and the gauntlet has been laid down between Alan Helmkamp and Bill Joyner.

Chris AKA The Urban Forester: Your words, actions, support and friendship are all something I am extremely grateful for.  Because of the so many Community activities you  continue to "keep alive" in Livonia and the respect so many have for you, of all the endorsements I have received, having yours means the world to me and I thank you. 

Comparing my "campaign" to those running for office has been a learning experience in and by its self.  Please know, that my words are very real when I tell you that you Mr. Joyner, have helped be a huge part of not only motivating me, but inspiring me to stand by my rule to NEVER give up. Thank you Sir. 

 What you wrote in Friday Musings 11/15/2019, will hopefully motivate a Community to finally understand that they can help provide opportunities, by exposing young minds to the myriad of career paths. From grade school right on though to High School, each step of the way, learning "from the stump".

Betsy Calhoun, Greenleaf Commission on Sustainability: Livonia is demonstrably competent at maintaining a high quality of life for its residents as far as municipal services, education, safety, and cultural opportunities go.  What it often seems to overlook in its earnestness to do just that, is the value of a fresh initiative.  

Vision and extra effort are required to achieve an unfamiliar trajectory, even at times when there is ample evidence that it is indeed the way forward.  

Livonia should not  shrink from a notion that in addition to exhibiting tried and true values, the city could also be seen as a real leader in sustainability.  Sustainability is the newest focus both economically, socially, and environmentally, and in a changing world, the preference is to be ahead of the curve.  

The Franciscan Sisters at Madonna have ably demonstrated the way forward with solar panels and their LEED certified Franciscan Center; as have corporations within our city boundaries such as Kohl's.  It is time for Livonia to take advantage of entrepreneurial talent such as Chris Last's in order to retain and attract both families and businesses to our community.

Dan MacIver at Financial & Portfolio Advisors mailed another 1,100 Best Kept Secrets of  Livonia Parks to 1,100 new residents this morning bringing the total of Best Kept Secrets Books to nearly 10,000 mailed to new residents.

This one was a partnership with the Livonia Civic Chorus who enclosed a postcard sharing details about concerts and about the Chorus.

Anastasia and Katie's set to open the first week of December

Regular readers of Musings will know that we have been looking forward to the opening of Anastasia and Katie's Coffee Shop. The cafe will employ people with and without disabilities, and will offer them job training and support.

Check them out in December on the west side of Merriman Road just north of Seven Mile.

The official chocolates of FridayMusings
Chef Joe Gilligan has considered himself an artist all his life. From a very young age he entertained himself with drawing, painting, sculpting, and film making. Cooking and baking were a favorite pastime too.

Originally Joe started attending Schoolcraft College in 2010 pursuing a Film/Art degree. He then changed his major in 2012 when he was accepted into the prestigious Baking and Pastry program at Schoolcraft. 

After graduation Joe had the opportunity to go to Paris, France. It was there that he developed a stronger love and respect for the art and creations of chocolate. He also purchased his first chocolate molds there!

Upon returning home, Joe started honing his skills as a pastry chef working as the last pastry chef at the Lark Restaurant in West Bloomfield, MI and Avalon in Detroit.

It is our mission to deliver high quality chocolates made with 100% organic butter and cream with the finest chocolates available with our flavors varying season to seasonia.
