Redefiniing Community comes from within
|
Pooling resources, both financially, and intellectually for the betterment and benefit of the community. Sounds great But what does it mean?
During the 1980's membership in service organizations dropped. The Michigan Jaycees went from a high of nearly 20,000 in 1980, the year this typewriter was statewide membership chairman, to around 3,000 today.
People did not lose interest in volunteering, every time there is a crisis, there are always people standing in line to help. But people were involved in earning two incomes, moving to new homes, read that as new communities, raising families in an increasingly competitive world.
Fast food came along. We stopped going out as often, just make a quick run-up to Burger King. The microwave hit the market, and we now had it licked. We could go work in our air-conditioned office. Return to our air-conditioned home. Pull into our garage. Pick up the remote. Then, turn on the microwave and, man we were in seventh heaven.
When that happened, we defined community based on what was being done by people that we elected to office. Need a park? Let the government buy it. Need a pretty gathering space? Let the government do it. Let private organizations raise the money and provide services, the parks, the schools? Let someone else do it.
It is easier to be detached. To cocoon. Let someone else do it.
It is now time to redefine community. It is not brick and mortar. It is not a place where people live in their homes and occasionally venture out. Community is not a philosophical pining to let someone else do it.
Now it is time for all of us to redefine community. To sit together. To talk together. To organize together. To raise the money needed to help with the creation of an infrastructure that will provide volunteer and networking opportunities. To refill the membership ranks of service clubs. To provide arts enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their work.
|
Livonia can and must have in place the organizations, the financing, and the backyard fence over which we can talk. And must have the volunteer infrastructure available for our neighbors to reach out in a time of need.
Call the Livonia Service Corps and help serve our community one resident at a time. Call them at 734-466-2019 ext. 1.
The bricks and mortar are done in Livonia. It is now our turn to accept the challenge to start the real building that needs to be done. The Livonia Service Corps is one step in that direction.

January 31st Regular and Livonia Study Meetings
|
Thanks to Carrie Budzinski and her Vote. Run. Serve. Livonia Facebook posting for this summary of the January 31st Regular and Study Meetings
Transparency, accountability and community engagement are essential in a democracy. Local government is important and City Council meetings provide insight into what's happening in your community. Here is a summary of the January 31st Regular and Study Meetings.
Reminder Nixel is no longer Livonia's emergency alert system. Sign up for Code Red to receive notices on local emergencies - severe weather, missing persons and more. https://livonia.gov/136/Livonia-Code-Red
The first reading was given for a new ordinance that consolidates/amends the fees for Zoning Board of Appeals Fees, Site Plan Review Application Fees, Waiver and Conditional Use Fees, Appeal to City Council Fee, and Zoning Amendment Fees
The Study Meeting session previews what you can expect to hear more about in future Regular Meetings.
The following were approved for the consent agenda:
Reappointment of William Tancill to the Livonia Board of Review.
Waive of city noise ordinance for a car show at Saint Colette's Catholic Church on Saturday, June 4, 2022
Installation of fiber optic networking to 16 city facilities, including city parks. This will potentially allow for public Wi-Fi at parks.
Improvement bond schedule for public improvements around the new Emerson Oaks subdivision.
Multiple bids and purchases requests.
The following were approved for the regular agenda:
Awarding of contract to Eganix for Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Prevention Treatment. This service would prevent FOG from coagulating in the city’s sewer lines. Council placed this on the regular due to questions on the no-bid aspect of the proposal.
Award of contract to Plante Moran Cresa for a Space Needs Assessments and Capital Planning. This is phase one of a consultation report looking at utilization of city buildings and necessary improvements with each building. The report would be out 4 months from approval. Council placed this on the regular due to questions on the no-bid aspect of this proposal.
Friendly reminder, you can watch Council Meetings on YouTube (both live and past meetings):

Decline to sign the
Let Mi Kids Learn Petition Drive
|
FridayMusings joins with the Michigan Parent Teacher Association in asking Michigan residents to Decline to Sign the Let MI Kids Learn petition.
The goal of this petition is to create a backdoor voucher system that would let donors receive tax credits from the School Aid Fund for up to $500 million dollars per year.
This would not only violate the Michigan State Constitution, but it would also take taxpayer dollars out of the School Aid Fund and give them to wealthy donors in the form of a tax credit for donations to nonprofits that benefit private schools.
The Michigan PTA has created a document to share with your membership on why these bills would hurt Michigan public school students, an explanation of their history, and some talking points
If you have any questions or comments about this petition drive, please contact Michigan PTA at info@michiganpta.org, or call Michigan PTA 734.975.9500.
